Looking at their paper specifications, they both have similar functions and capabilities.
The comparison can be found at http://www.letsgodigital.org/html/review/nikon/d40x/nikond40x_EN4.html
Now, testing it at the show was a challenge as many people seem to be crowding around the booth trying out the various camera models on display.
When I finally got my hands on the D80 and the D40X, I literally hogged it for the next hour or two.
Holding the two, the feel is better for the D80 as I got big hands and big fingers. The comfort is better for the bigger body that the D80 has.
Playing around with the lenses, I find there is more control for the Nikon lens compared to the Olympus. I can zoom and focus the background or the foreground to my preference, with the option to set the focusing on manual or auto.
This gives me better control over the subject I would like to photograph. Something that I like in a camera. Control.
The only obvious difference between the D80 and the D40X is the number of hot buttons each have to change settings on the go.
For the D40X, you need to go thru a few more extra steps of going thru the menu to achieve the same settings that you can do on the D80 with the press of a few hot buttons.
Now the question is, given the two, which would you choose?
Price difference between the two is about $500, with the latter being more expensive.
