bathing a dog - How often do you bathe a dog?

I wanted to do it once a week, but two people warned me not to bathe a dog often. This is because it destroys the shine of their coat, and makes them prone to colds. The guy at the pet shop said if they get too dirty bathe them once a fortnight, but not once a week. Mine look such such tramps always. Whenever I see them, I feel like dropping them into a tub of water and scrubbing them. How often do you bathe your dog?

In the old days, it was thought to be very drying and damaging to a dog's skin to over bathe it. I think this feeling persists today and you will continue to have people tell you once a week is too often, and some people will say once a month is too often. But nowadays, there are so many gentle, safe shampoos made for dogs, and hair dryers and doggie sweaters and such. It is not a problem to bathe your dog weekly. However, you should NOT use a flea shampoo weekly and you should not use ANY human shampoo, even baby shampoo. Dogs actually have more sensitive skin than humans. Use a hypoallergenic, all natural dog shampoo, and the most important part is to keep it out of their eyes, keep water and shampoo out of their ears, and to RINSE very, very thoroughly. If you use a blow dryer, then keep it moving constantly to avoid burning the dog's skin, and I try to actually keep my own hand between the dryer and the dog's skin, which allow me to ruffle his fur to speed the drying as well as monitor the heat. I'm sorry but I have never understood what a fortnight is, tho i have heard it many times, but weekly is really no problem. I've worked with dogs for 30 years, and known many people who bathe their dogs that frequently. Gentleness is the key.

I have a Yorkie and a Boston Terrier. I can get away with not giving my boston terrier a bathe often, but the Yorkie can barely last a week. He has long hair so when he pees, it always gets on his coat so he winds up reeking. So I usually put both in the tub and wash them together every Saturday afternoon.

I bathe ours when she starts to stink or once every 2 weeks, since she is mostly indoors. It always ends up in injury to me so I don't look forward to it and hate going to the groomers and paying someone for that.

We would give our dogs a bath about once every two to three months. I would always say we were going to do it atleast once a month but that just never happend. Our dogs hated getting baths so the once every so often was a chore enough for me.

My dogs hate baths too. When I was giving them their bath, they cried a lot; I suppose they thought I was murdering them ;)

In the warmer weather we bathed our dog about once a month or so, more often if she was dirty. The time she got into roofing tar, she had several baths to get it out. Now that it is cold I feel bad bathing her because if she takes a long time to dry and if she has to go out to the bathroom I'm afraid she will be too cold.

I pretty much do it when it's necessary. I would prefer one bath a month only but since it's been really muddy here recently I've had to give him a bath once or sometimes even twice a week.

Hi,i have my dog bathed once a month by a groomer who also gives her a nice trim.Ohter than that i never bath her only of she has gotten in some mud and very, very dirty.Plus you can use baby shampoo on a dogs coat to bath them, its less hard on their fur and skin and less drying out of their skin which can develop little rashes(no hair spots) if using a very smelly shampoo.Baby shampoo is less cheaper than nromal dog shampoo, does the same thing and smells better!Haha. If they are dirty in some spots, just wipe them with a face cloth,i do.It helps keep up their nice appearance. Not often, and only at summer time.MY dog has short hair and is very cold after a bath, it doesnt stay indoors so i must watch after or it will get cold.If its extremely dirty, after playing with mud or something, i would take it a walk to the lake and have it take a swim. But after that we would run and walk a bit, you just cant leash the dog again, without movement it will be freezing cold.

You do have to be careful, bathing too much can actually dry their coat out and strip it of important oils in their coat that they need. We have a westipoo who goes to a groomer about every 8 wks and that is the only bath he gets unless he gets into something. My husband has a german shorthaired pointer who he takes in his semi with him and he bathes him about once every 3 or 4 mths so that the truck doesn't smell like " dog". Our other 3 dogs only get a bath about every 6 mths or so unless they have gotten into something and need one.
