What is a Young Coconut used for??

United States
January 2, 2008 6:21am CST
I went into an Asian market tonight and saw a display with young coconuts. Since I love coconut, I bought one. It was stripped down the the inner white part of the shell, but once I got it open, there was only a small amount of white slime on the walls of it. So what the heck did I just pay for?? Is the milk used for some cooking or something? I have never used coconut milk for anything, but the mature ones have it too... so what's the point? Anyone here know??

Tender coconut - We eat the flesh
I come from the land of cocnuts. The 'white slime' is eaten and it's sweeter than the mature ones which are harder. You get more cocunut water from the tender coconuts and it's a refreshing drink. We usually eat the flesh as it is but sometimes we have it with jaggery too (you can use brown sugar). I don't know if it is used to cook. We've always eaten it just as it is and we love it. Actual cocunut milk that is used for cooking is squeezed out from ground mature cocnut flesh. We do it at home and it is used for cooking certain dishes. It is slightly thick in consistency and white in colour. But the clear liquid you find inside the coconut is cocnut water that we drink.

I tried a little bit of the slime, but couldn't get past the mental block that it was the consistancy of gelled snot. But I agree it was sweeter. I just wasn't sure it was for eating and talked myself out of it. Besides, there was only a tiny bit of it then LOTS of the water (which I drained into the sink). So now I am interested in trying again so I can drink the water. Thanks a bunch for the info. I hate that I wasted the part that I was supposed to get out of it, but now I know!!

Actually, I did try to give it to my kitties first, but then it went down the drain. Oh well. I need to go in there again when I get paid, so I'll get another one and try it out. I'm glad I know better now!! I hate that I wasted it.

Hi chajudLeoBit, The water in the young coconut is very good for health. It contains lot of vitamins and minerals. It reduces the heat of the body. Actually the asians, purticularly Indians use this tender(young)coconuts in plenty.Even the doctors recommend it for patients.Purticularly for those suffering from jaundice. White slime in the young coconut is just for eating, but it is only for the water that it is(young coconuts) are used. Anyhow you took something that is good for health and that is the point. Good Luck.

Gee, good question ChaJudLeoBit! I've always wondered about that myself. Thanks to the posters above, I now understand a whole lot more about coconuts, coconut milk, and how healthy it is in it's young state. Great answers for those of us who hadn't a clue!

Coconut - Young coconut for sale.
Here in the Philippines, we call the young coconut buko. The juice or water is very sweet and has medicinal properties as when we have UTI, we are advised to drink young coconut water. The flesh is used for many things especially the what we call Buko Salad and it's very delicious and nutritious too. They also use the young flesh meat of the buko in special cakes and others what we call kakanin. The young cocunut here is very expensive and all that we can eat which have the buko flesh are very dear. We prepare the buko salad in special occasions for it is very delicious but very expensive.

Interesting that it can be used as a UTI teatment, or prevention. I wonder why it isn't sold in American grocery stores. I haven't bought another one since this post, but it reminded me that I wanted to. Thanks

I've never seen one in my supermarket, and I've never seen one in my health food store. But if I do see one, you can bet I'm going to buy one and try it!

I have only seen them in this Asain market, no where else. It's cut into an interesting shape, like a cone that goes into a point on top.

Honestly I didn't either but then I don't like coconut so never even pay any attention except to avoid eating anything that has it in it but I do think it's important to learn new things and you never know when that information may come in handy.

you can store the coconut water in your fridge so you can have a drink of it once a day. drinking a glass a day would help prevent UTI. if you don't want to drink it as it is, you can try and add condense milk, or sugar and evaporated milk to add a little flavor to it. and then put it in the fridge to cool it. its a very good refreshment especially if it has coconut meat on it. but even with a little coconut water would do. ^__^ as far as i know, coconut water is not used in cooking. it is always drank as it is. the milk you're talking about is the white liquid extracted from matured coconut meat. ^__^ it is used in many Filipino dishes.
