"green" groceries

I was just finishing a response to another discussion about the environment and it occurred to me that grocery managers need to start promoting environmentally-friendly behaviour in their customers. They can start by giving little discounts to shoppers who bring their own re-usable bags, and so save on using new paper/plastic bags! I am sure they will find that they save more in the end by not having to buy so many more new bags! It's not so hard for people to carry their own reusable bags. All they have to do is keep the bags in the trunk of their cars so the bags are always exactly where they need them. Grocers also can tackle the companies that provide them with stuff to help curb the overuse of packaging. After all, they can influence this by refusing to stock items from those companies that use much more packaging material than is necessary. We spend so much money on food, and time buying food, it just seems like if we start there, we can make a big difference in how "green" the environment becomes.

I couldn't agree more. I was looking at the "green" bags last time I was at Wal-Mart and inquired about how much the cost. They were 1.00 apiece and didn't hold as much as the plastic bags. It would take at least 30 bags to hold my purchases for that day. That would have been an extra 30 bucks that I just didn't have at the time.

Sounds like they need to make those "green" bags a bit bigger! It totally doesn't make sense to make them so small that they are an inconvenience to use! An extra 30 bucks is definitely a lot to pay for bags, it's really a shame they didn't have bigger ones!

Tell me about it. And they didn't look very sturdy either. I doubt they would have held a 5 pound bag of sugar.
