Pre-conceived notions

Do you categorize people based on age? Do you assume they only have a particular perspective, certain interests and knowledge? Like would you assume a young person today would have no knowledge of eighties movies (I know plenty who do and prefer them), or someone in their thirtees would have no clue about old films, or say old fifties artists like Chuck Berry, Bill Hailey and the coments? Do you carefully choose your answers on mylot based on age?

Nope i dont choose answers or discussions based on anything except weather i have an interest in them or not! i dont take the time to look at peoples profile pages to find that out unless i am seeing a lot of them in my discussions, or answering a lot of theirs. I try not to assume anything about anyone cause you really can't judge a book by its cover. Sometimes i admit its hard not to judge, but i try to keep an open mind about almost everyone. UNLESS THEY MAKE ME MAD!! lol then i could care less. (like my ignorant neighbours!!)

Thanks for joining in sissygrl. This discussion was prompted by a side discussion I had with someone in progamers discussion on avatar. There are those I guess that look at the age to detremine what they say or if they want to answer a topic. There was someone who thought one of my discussions on my baby was bull twinkines because I say I'm like ninety in my profile. That's just a gentle hint not to judge me by my age. Chaknow? What goes on with your neighbors?

Over the years I have learnt to never prejudge anybody, but recently a young lad at work presumed I wouldn't like his taste in music cos of my age. My response to him was that I had two daughters roughly his age so do in fact listen to some of the sounds he was in too, which quite surprised him.

No I do not. On my birth certificate it says I am 41, but I know more about the movies of the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's than I do know about I Pods and all the other gadgets of today. I never assume that a person will or will not know anything. I ask do they know about whatever and then if they don't then I can explain and if after that I find out that he or she was too young to know what I was talking about then I would understand. But to assume that a person will or won't know something purely because of age is wrong. Sometimes my age does show. There are some Motown artists i don't know when I hear them. And some of the films I saw and thought were original are really remakes.I answered a post where a friend wanted to know which old t.v. shows I remember and my shows were the ones from the 1970's , not the 60's. But all in all I try to learn about the eras " before my time".

I never assume based on age, I might make a few assumptions about a person based on their background (where they grew up, etc.) but I have learned there are exceptions to every preconceived notions--as I am one of them--A biologist that has a huge literature background--so I don't tailor my answers.

I never make notions based on age. Simply because my interests wouldn't fit my age bracket. I am 26 years old, but I have interests that range above and below my bracket. I was raised by my Great-Great Grandmother, so I have a lot of insight and maturity that most my age wouldn't have. At the same time, I am a big kid, so somethings I might say are a bit immature for my age as well. Its not the age, its the mindset. I bring my opinions to the table everyday here in mylot, and I don't think I should even have to consider editing them just because the person I am responding to is of a certain age. This website is freedom of speech at its finest, and I will not curtail my freedom to appease another just because they are older than me.

No....not at all. I just respond with my opinion and it has nothing to do with age!
