Sunscreen

I'm going to Cape Town this week and so went to Boots to buy some sunscreen but it was absolutely extortionate! It was about £12 for a tiny tube! That's ridiculous! Why is it so expensive? Has it always been that way?
I was buying some because even though we have some in our cupboard at home, I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that you shouldn't use the same stuff two years in a row and always buy fresh. Is there any truth to that or is it just hype? I'd rather use the old stuff that we have than spend a small fortune on more if I can.

I think that the price goes up in winter, well, more like the price drops in summer. Actually I'm surprised you found some during the depths of this dreary wet winter.
I've heard that it can go off and the effectiveness is reduced... but I've never seen any evidence for this and generally assume it's just a way to make you buy more (like the "Do Not Reuse Bottle" messages on spring water bottles... what's that about?!).
I rarely go out in the sun (pale skin) and try to wear loose light shirts over my spaghetti strap tops in summer. So the SPF 50 tube I have has lasted me a while. I only use it on my face and the rest of me when I'm swimming and for the last two years it has worked just fine.
What make were you buying? Boots own is pretty good, but Piz Buin (I think that's right) is brilliant and well worth the pennies if you have sensitive skin; it's Sahara tested :)

That's the best idea; check it and see then buy some out there.
Why didn't I think of that?
Although when I went to Naples I couldn't find sunscreen ANYWHERE! And the locals were not sure what I was talking about (my Italian is non-existent).

What was Naples like? We stayed in Sorrento just over a year ago and were warned by everyone that the crime there was dreadful. I really wanted to go though because the museum there has all the best artifacts from Pompeii.

The bottle of water message is to avoid confusion and lawsuits. If the water inside a reused bottle gets someone sick, it might not be that clear that the water bottling company was not responsible. Bottled water is usually so pure and free from bacteria and germs that when opened becomes a great place to germs get into.

Yes, in the winter shops that do sell suncream charge a lot. I always use old tubes of suncream that I have left over from my previous trips. I like to be careful in the sun and guard against getting sun burnt. I hope that you will have a fantastic time in Cape Town and get some lovely sunny weather in South Africa.

I'll brave it with the leftovers then, rather than being stung by winter prices!
Thank you, on both counts!

That's really expensive, I always lived in countries with plenty of sun throughout the year so prices of budget brands are 5 pounds or so. In should find good deals in Cape Town. Regarding any sunscreen you might have, try to look any indication of after opened validity.

There's no use by dates unfortunately. They should really put a date on the package.
It was surprisingly difficult to find sunscreen in South Africa, but that might have just been where we were.

I think the price of sunscreen is shocking, especially as it is a necessity not a luxury. I read somewhere that sunscreen goes off, but it could be that it just doesn't work as well as opposed to not working at all (I don't really know though!) I'm not sure if they put VAT on sunscreen (I don't think they do for children's) but I don't think they should. Anyway, I hope you have a lovely holiday.

Precisely. It's not like it's a beauty product, it's to keep you safe from burns and other damage.
I think they should all be VAT free and have "use by" dates.
I had a wonderful vacation, thanks.
