Fixing Computer Viruses - It is a pain!

I've been a computer technician now for over 10+ years - all I can say it is getting tougher and getting better at the same time. Technology is growing and advancing than what we think of it. More new tech toys to play with, computers are getting smaller, software is advancing, system requirements are asking for more parts to boost up to speed - But then there are those computer viruses to deal with almost on a daily basis.
I know many of you have dealt with viruses - the stories I've heard and the list just keeps going - like a stack of piled papers to fill out - it is endless - you end up pulling out your hair and just want to run away.
Two days ago I get a call from a client that called me they got viruses on their computer. I asked him how did he get them, and the usual same saying goes he was on his email and he opened up an attachment and his system went haywire and crazy. So yesterday I go over to his house to check it out - he started getting fake error messages which I was able to spot quick - I'm not going to technical detail about it either so to let you know.
All the information of the viruses I was able to look online and it was a very well known severe virus called the "Trojan Vundo" virus - a nasty one - Why? Because it installs multiple infections on your system - advertising Fake Anti-Virus programs, Fake Anti-Spyware programs, Fake Internet Cookie Cleaers and Fake Hard Drive Cleaners - installing these means trouble.
He was using Symantec Antivirus Client which is an older version of Norton - different from Norton Antivirus, but similar to say - It detected the numerous viruses but was only able to delete a couple, quarantine some and the rest was not able to delete because it was denied due to the fact the viruses were already in source with the systems RAM/Memory and being used as a source through Microsoft Windows - and it is common that Microsoft Windows has system files that can't be turned off or deleted because they always have to run in the background in order for it to operate - but when getting a viruses and attaches itself as a system file - is like a human body that has a virus or cancer that becomes part of your body - what a headache it is let me tell you.
So I removed Symantec Antivirus Client and installed the top two recommended Antivirus programs which are free - yes free and legit! AVG Antivirus Free Edition and BitDefender Antivirus 2008 - I used these two as a combination to attack the remove Trojan Vundo - BitDefender found hidden crucial viruses that Symantec never found to begin with - It did a great job to remove about 17 infections but failed to remove 2 viruses that were attach to Windows and through the memory. - The known files were called mmjeoeiu.dll and wvwur.dll - which are linked through Trojan Vundo. Those two gave me a bad and hard time.
Now I installed AVG Antivirus Free Edition - to make a long story short - I ran a scan and it detected both those two files I mentioned and removed them completely - regardless if it was through the memory. AVG Antivirus people is the best you can get - very effective, convenient and worth to get and it is free. So why spend over $50 of your time when you can get something so legit you don't have to worry about getting attacked by viruses and then stress out about them? The client was happy - so happy he offered me more repairs to do such as upgrading his laptop - and able to get a good ransom afterwards.

It all depends on the websites, programs you download and such. Since Mac has their own programs based on their operating system - Then it is a less chance getting a virus. Only critical point on catching a virus in a Mac is usually checking certain emails with attachments and if one were to visit certain torrent sites to download files for Macs - good for you that you haven't encountered those problems.

Very good point, viruses are becoming more and more apparent, and Windows still stays unsecure. Microsoft needs to make better way to update computers that is faster and less user intervention (but still customizable for those who want to). Windows also needs a better default antivirus/firewall (2 way). AVG is great for being a free product, but so is Nod32 and Kaspersky. I tried BitDefender for about a month but just prefer the other ones.
