Grammar police here...stand away from your keyboar - wonder why

Talk about the height of laziness when someone can't write out the words "the" and "and". When I read "who is d best actor n d worst" I have to wonder if they are just being lazy because they seem to have some grasp of the English language right? I've had to read subject lines more than once to figure out what "d" and "n" actually stand for. Of course there is the "ur" instead of your....just two more letters to write out the whole word! Since we don't have any kind of time limit here I don't get it. Are these people just being lazy? Do you think it's just the kids who do it and don't know any better? What could the reason for this possibly be?

I don't think it's a matter of learning english. They seem to get the discussion part down fine so what's their deal?

I think its mostly the younger crowd that shorten their words or use texting language as part of their everyday writing. It can get annoying at times!

I think it is because many people are into the text message lingo. Mostly the younger people I think. My daughter will actually say BFF (best friends forever) or OMG (oh my God). When she types on MSN she uses all kinds of short form writing which i HATE with a passion. I heard there are children finishing highschool that can barely read and I can see why when they use so much of this text msn typing. I don't mind LOL at the end of something funny or something like that, but when the short form gets to the point I have to decode the subject I get annoyed. I feel it is lazy too. When I see one I don't bother anymore. Too lazy to type out something I can understand then I am too lazy to responde to it.

AAAAHAHAHAHA!...You're so funny and you certainly made me laugh this morning! I think this is the new generation language for computer talk today. But, like you, I have to take a minute or so to try and figure out just what they're saying, hahaha, as I'm going What?..What?...Whaaatttt in my head?

I would like to say that there is an advantage and definitely a disadvantage to this shortcut. When my father learned to text message in the shortcut way, I really had to reread his messages more than once. I think he's thinking that I know what message he's sending. LOL...It's funny and sometimes frustrating to guess. I know that my father's not trying to be lazy, but he thinks that's the way we communicate, obviously, I had to remind him not to make his messages too short. It's a matter of getting used to, but I agree that it shouldn't affect the English proficiency of the world especially the youth....Too much to say, but what I really want to say is that it may sometimes to be easy to send a message faster if it was in a shortcut form, but otherwise, to be understood better, it should be in complete grammar. Good luck to all!

Oh this drives me crazy too! I teach nursing and the students go to the hospital on the evening before our clinical day to chose and patient and research the patient's diagnosis and medications. The next morning they are to share their findings with me so that I can determine if they understand well enough to take care of the patient safely. I want you to know that I had a student hand their work to me one morning and it was written in that fashion!! I handed it right back, sent her home with an unsatisfactory for the day and assigned her a makeup day! I fully understand that those types of shortcuts are acceptable on text messages, computer chat rooms and the like, but not on written work for school! Oh I was irate that morning!

I dont answer these ones. I mean sure i use some acronyms like lol, But i dont know if its lazy, or maybe its just what they are used to because i know in text messages you only have a certain amount of characters that you can plug into one message, so some people use those little shortcuts to fit all of their message in, or not have to type out as many letters. *shrug* i dont answer them and i dont read them either ;)

I've never understood why ppl do that...LOL...I just noticed I put people as ppl...I guess I am guilty of it to a point. I don't do the whole d or n or 2 for to or r for are...it's tends to irritate me. I'm not sure why other ppl do it though. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Speed That would be my guess. People want to write to as many as they can in as fast a time as they can to get more money. Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel, Ganglian Cysts on Wrists That would be another guess. I had wrist problems for awhile and any short cut I could take, I took. Cultural Communication group If everyone you send messages to does that, then that is normal for you and the people you communicate with. Also the phone text messaging doesn't provide very much room, so they have to abbreviate. d and n can be problems. R u ok? Makes more sense than all those extra letters to me. In an emergency like a schoolhouse shooter, if may be more efficient and better. Take care

ctrymuziklvr, ur just like me, so far behind d times, LOL! I have a 16 yr-old still @ home so I have had 2 learn some of this texting lingo 2 keep up w/ her conversations online & on d phone. It is not laziness, it is a need 4 speed. If texting or IMing some1, it would take 4ever 2 spell out every single word, so young peeps have developed text talk. OMG, I thought I'd never learn any of that stuff! Now that I no it bothers u, I'll try not 2 use it so much. This new text talk is confusing & can b as annoying as military acronyms. I'm truly sorry 4 any annoyance. BBF! :)

I don't particularly like reading those discussions. The people that write those discussions probably do so because that is how they IM and text message. I don't even shorten my words when I am texting. I'd rather take the extra time and type everything out.

I think that a lot of them don't know enough of the English language to be able to spell out the words. We might think it's easy because we know what each letter sounds like, but not everyone does. They may know what they want to say just don't know how to put it in print. I forgive these people and if I have tor ead their posting twice to understand it, so be it. I will still try to respond to them because they have just as much right to be here posting as the rest of us. I am happy for them that they are trying and in doing so they may be learning their English skills. I encourage these members. If you don't want to read them twice or try to understand their posting, then just leave the posting alone. Don't worry about them and just continue on, on your way to the next one. So in my opinion, no I don't think people are just being lazy, although some of them might be, I think in general they are trying.

I spent a lot of time chatting in my younger days. It drove me nuts there, after all it doesn't save much time to type u instead of you. Laugh out Loud and Rolling on the Floor laughing make a little more sense (LOL and ROFL). However, it doesn't really take much effort, unless you don't know your keyboard at all. Then two letters for the hunt and peck type of keyboarder might actually take a lot of work...

it is not just kids doing this. the internet, mainly instant messaging, that's made this part of the norm I guess. Too many intialized messages and discussions. I think it's actually rude to a point. But it is bearable as I see it all too often here. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I actually think some of these idiots think it looks cool. like all the people that lived in London their whole lives and have Jamaican accents even though their parents don't. I tend to ignore posts written like that, or ask them what they were actually trying to type. being bad at english isn't an excuse, really. lots of people who aren't great at english still make and effort, and would know that it's them and not dem.

I've also noticed this, ctry, and I think it is more a product of a generation that is lazy when it comes to using the skills we put so much effort into learning. These days they are looking for a shortcut to everything-cooking, rearing kids, social skills, and communication skills. It seems that people want to act more and more like machines than humans. I think many of them believe that if they use these shortcuts people won't be able to gauge just how educated they are.

Your image of your discussion made me laugh. Yeah! I feel you where you're coming from. Sometimes it does frustrate where certain people can't spell properly. Don't they act like they are text messaging here than actually taking the time to write a topic? I wonder how the system works with Mylot for those that can't spell properly. Or do they get paid well even if they wrote a long page with incorrect, lazy shortcut spellings. I have to say sometimes it is hard to understand what they're saying. In tagalog we have a word called "Barok" which means a crooked broken language like someone who it talking backwards or upside down. Yeah it does get frustrating or just tempting to tell the person to improve in their spelling. I know a lot of third world foreign countries (I don't plan to name them) have a hard time typing in proper english. Can't blame them because some of these people are learning english on their own or whoever is teaching them english is probably throwing them off at a bad start. Much better of course if they learned it properly in schools since english is the biggest growing language in the world. Then again those who are being lazy to typing are just either desperate into getting these posts fast just to see their numbers grow - yeah good luck on that most chances are it won't work - or they just have bad spelling all that time. Thanks for posting this discussion and for the funny pic you posted!

Well, I don't think it is because of laziness. I came from the Philippines, and that has issue has become popular here. They attributed it to much to texting in cellphone. Many people here of all ages, but mostly teenagers become used to texting and they are having their message abbreviated or shorten the word in as much as they can to save spaces. Just like "I would like to know you more" in text it will become "I wud lyk to no u mor".
