I have just had to bathe my eyes in cold water because they itch like mad! I am trying hard NOT to touch them let alone rub them, but today they are very itchy, sore and red! I use cucumber to put on them to cool them down and ease the itching but normally that soothes and works but not today, I have just taken a clarityn and I have the snivvles too I hate putting drops into my eyes, I know I'm a big baby but I was wondering if anyone had any cures for itchy sore eyes. I am hoping it's not a pet allergy, can you suddenly develop an allergy for cats? I did stroke my cat this morning and give her lots of love, but now my eyes are streaming Could it also be central heating? We have it on most of the time and I know that dries my eyes out. I wear glasses for the computer and they have been recently checked Any help or suggestions before wolfie claws his eyes out I would hate to be allergic to cats! We used to have 4 cats and their fur was bad enough so surely one cat won't be the problem?

Oh, Reese, I'm so sorry to hear about your itch eyes! Just talking (typing - lol) about it makes mine want to itch! I'm a contact-wearer by day and glasses-wearer by night, so I know where you're coming from on that. I also have allergies. Let me explain that so maybe you can narrow down what the problem is with your eyes. When I was three years old, I was tested for allergies. The test came up with the boring dust allergy and that's about it except for one type of medication that could kill me if I'm not careful...oh, and I happened to be allergic to dogs when I was young also. Now several years later, I've had a second allergy testing because I seem to have developed more allergies since then, which is completely normal. This could be true in your case. Come to find out, in addition to food allergies, I'm also allergic to cockroaches (imagine that!), dust AND dust mites, ragweed, and now cats instead of dogs! I surely hope for yours and your cat's sake that you aren't allergic to them, but it's entirely possible. I'm not trying to be the bearer of bad news either. Has the weather been changing recently? I know it's produced many tornadoes here in the U.S., so perhaps that's what had been happening. When the weather changes here, I always produce a lovely cold and have the whole itchy-eye thing too. It could just be "normal" allergies. Have you cleaned your house recently to rid it of dust and dust mites? That's another idea. When I'm around a lot of dust, it's murder on my sinuses. I despise allergies. I don't know too many things that will directly help stop the itching in your eyes, but applying a cool, wet cloth to them might relieve some of the itching. If your eyes start to burn, I highly suggest doing that. If you develop sores on your eyelids, start using hot cloths rather than cold. Sometimes I'll develop sores (stys) like that on my eyes and will use a hot cloth that relieves the pain and itch completely. Basically, it's a slight infection that the hot cloth will kill. There are also cream/lotion products you can buy that have aloe and cooling gels in them. You might be able to find one to smooth onto your eyelids and beneath your eyes to soothe them. You can also put the aloe cream in the refrigerator for an even better cooling and soothing effect. Make sure you read the label, though, to ensure it's a product that can be used around the eye area or you'll have worse problems than you started with! I hope these suggestions can offer you some relief! Good luck, my friend.

Thanks a bunch for best response, Reese. I guess I didn't realize how long of a response mine turned into! I hope you could read it ok considering how your eyes were probably feeling by that time. (LOL) It was a pleasure responding to this discussion especially because, yes I really dug in, but it's also about helping a good friend of mine. Thanks again!

I do know my darling that you can develop allergies very suddenly to anything but it doesn't seem likely to be the cat. It could be a mild eye infection that you could even use a special cream or tablet for instead of drops - you are not being a baby , lots of people don't like putting drops in their eyes - anyway if it isn't better already and you are still suffering on Monday I would go to the dr, or to the chemist if you have a decent one they should be able to help you! Sorry I couldn't help more, you know I would if I could! xxx

I can become allergic to my pets during the winter months. The dry air from having the heat on, plus the pets shedding all over the place will do it. The best things that have worked for my eyes is taking a cold, damp rag and laying it on my eyes. During spring/summer, i really don't have that problem. I keep my windows open for fresh air. I just get allergies from cotton and pollen in the air. lol. I don't know where you at, but i can tell you that in my house all this dander and fur is just floating around and the heat will kick it up big time...i'm vaccuming everyday, which seems to help. i don't sweep my floors, i take a damp rag and wipe it down so i'm not kicking up more hair. i have 2 of the most fluffiest cats on earth and I have seen balls of hair just float off of them. lol. so, yea, alot of it has to do w/ you central heating. My furnace has to be cleaned every other day or so, because fur is a magnet in there. the hair may not get through, but that dander will. If you go to the pet store there's a waterless cat shampoo. that will help some. also w/ all this shedding and dry heat, it causes the pets to have dry and itchy skin, making it worse. so, it's good to bath them in pet moisturizer. Hope i've helped. Sorry for your suffering...i'm right there w/ you. lol

I think you might find it is the central Heating or it might help to come of the Computer for a bit I really do not know Sweetheart I can not see you suddenly being allergic to Cats just like that Has she just had Flea treatment? It could be that Or did you get something on your Hands and then rubbed your Eyes? Are you tired? Try splashing them with cold water for a while to wash them out Sweetie I really hope that you get rid of that as I know it is aggravating Hugs and Gissi sends love and Kisses to Wolfie xxxx

Need to have my eyes fully working for my great night out tonight ;0) It will also give my eyes a rest too from the central heating and the computer. I do regular eye exercises when I am on the computer. It's probably a combination rather than pinpointing it down to just one thing. Love to you and Gissi xxxx

Awww wolfie.. I hate this for you... BTW good morning. Instead of suddenly developing an allergy to cats, there could have been something on your cats coat to cause such an irritation. How did you sleep over nnight? Do not try and apply anything else to your eyes for a bit. Go lie down and rest them. Itchy dry eyes could be anything at all. I really hate this for you Sugar.

Wolfie, try some benadryl or some antihistamine to dry you up and see if that helps. You could be allergic to your cat but it cold also be something in the air or mold or many things. The key is to get you comfortable then worry about the cause later.

I have a condition called Blepheritis, one of the symptoms is dry eyes which creates red eyelids which creates itching. Anyway it requires keeping the eyelids as clean as possible and lubricating the eyes. I have started to use homeopathic eye drops which are fantastic compared to the non-natural ones. The difference - the homeopathic eyedrops don't sting when they hit the eye. And instead of using a chemical based cleanser for my eyes I use baby shampoo - it doesn't sting and does the same job. In Australia unfortunately homeopathic medicines are very expensive so I get them from the USA. One brand is Similasan (you can get Dry Eye Relief and Allergy Eye relief) The brand is Swiss I think. The drops really work and don't hurt at all. And they are not expensive.

hi wolfie! ^__^ i always experience that kind of problem when the weather is too hot and i spend too much time in front of the computer. i guess for me its the hot water and radiation from the computer monitor. what i do is i wash my eyes with room temperature water. i do it a few times until the itchiness and redness disappears. i try hard not to scratch my eyes too because it would worsen the itchiness and redness. and then i would take a rest and close my eyes for a few hours. i also use Vaseline eye drops. its not that bad. its comforting actually. and it lessens the redness faster. ^__^

I heard that the less serious Peanut allergy (not the one that sends you into shock and stops you breathing) causes itchy eyes and that you can suddenly develop it. Have you eaten anything containing nuts today? The only way to find out if it's an allergy is to go and get tested by your doctor if it doesn't stop. I hope it's just temporary and it's not your cat you are allergic too.

I wear contact lenses and know that my eyes get dry and itchy sometimes. I try comfort drops in my eyes and this usually adds the moisture that I need in my eyes. Central heating dries eyes a bit I think. Air conditioning on planes dries my eyes out and make my contact lenses irritate me. I have an allergy to some cat fur. If it gets on my lips they swell as an allergic reaction. I am not too bad with English type cats unless they moult a lot and that makes me sneeze. However foreign cats like the Siamese and Burmese really upset my allergy to cat fur. My eyes water and I keep sneezing. The fur makes me gasp and have a few breathing difficulties. I am fine around my mum's English cat but very allergic to my friend's Siamese cats. I lived with 2 cats when I was a child and went to college during the week when I was 16. I was fine at college but sneezed all weekend. Now I have 2 poodles as they don't upset my allergies. Good luck I hope that you have not developed an allergy to cat fur. xx

I sympathize with you, wolfie! Not long ago I was going through the same situation. I'm pretty sure that what you have is an allergy. It could be something in the air or in your environment. I hope you have not developed an allergy to your beloved kitty. I do know that allergies can start at any time, so it might be wise if you have it checked out by a doctor. I hate those eye drops too, but other than the things you are doing, I can't think of another remedy. Hope you're better soon.

Distilled Water of rose flower is available in the market. You should wash your eyes with this water. We call it “ARQ E GULAB” in our national language Urdu and also in Persian. You may call it juice of rose, as I think. Any how this is noted that this distilled water of rose is much help full in itching trouble in the eyes. I would like to suggest you should rush to doctor as the cases of eyes are very sensitive.

Hey wolfie. How could you be allergic to cats? I thought you were a wolf? Hehe, just kidding. Sometimes it happens to me too with my hamsters and rabbits (never with my frogs, lol) but it usually goes away the next day. Sometimes if you vacuum the floor and buy an air filter it helps.

Wolfie, It could be allergies--after not having any as a child, I've grown into having horrible allergies! Mostly, it's cats, but dust and mold can get to me too! Are they red? If so, it could be an infection, like pink eye. I had a similar problem last year, even changing contacts constantly...turns out my former eye doctor (and you'll see why he's my former eye doctor) prescribed the wrong contact lenses for me--I've gone back to my first eye doctor and she got the right ones in my eyes--no problems at all with my eyes (allergies are still horrendous though!). You may need to see an allergist to get to the bottom of it. Good luck!

It could be an allergy. Have you used any thing different to clean your glasses? You could also need an eye wash. Sometimes it is the dry air, although I wonder how there could be dry air in England unless you have central heating. Here is a link http://coldflu.about.com/od/othercommonillnesses/a/allergiesvscold.htm What you have to do is to find out if you are using anything new and if that corresponds to the time when you first decided to have that problem. I do not think you can develop an allergy for cats, but then I did not think I could develop an allergy for some perfumes either.

oh.. i really sympathise with your problem. I know what you are going through because i had the same problem till about a couple of weeks back. Initially, the doc told me that it was because of an increase in the power of my glasses.. i attributed it to increased computer usage, and got it remedied.. but the itching and watering wouldn't go. Later, i found it to be some sort of dust allergy. the doc prescribed an anti allergic tablet and an eye drops for a week, and now i am cured. Don't neglect your eyes.. visit an opthalmologist and cure your problem..

Are you sure its just allergy? IS it not conjunctivitis? I had itchy, sore, red eyes last week and put some eye drops (fusidic acid), 2 drops twice a day for two days and now its gone. It could also be allergy but I don't think your cat's fur could get into to your eyes wihout irritating your nose first. Better consult the physician if you cannot handle it anymore. I only experimented on the fusidic acid because my daughter was using it and the label said it could be used for conjunctivitis which I suspected as the culprit for my sore eyes.
