Why does public violence happen?

Ok, I was thinking about this morning, about school violence and other forms of public violence (a girl recently got stabbed at one of the local schools), and then I turn on my computer and learned that four people got shot at a shopping mall.

So what drives people to do things like this? Is it that they want to die famous? Or are they really upset with the world? Or is it mental illness?
Now some of the violence, I think I understand. When Columbine happened, I found myself grateful that I did not have access to firearms while I was in High School--I got bullied a lot, and I understood how a kid could decide that was a sloution. It is actually not a solution, and I am glad that I have matured since then, but I do understand the emotions behind it.
But to shot up a shopping mall? I can't wrap my head around that one at all. Why would anyone chose to shoot up a shopping mall?

In general it is a cry for attention and they really don't care if its negative or positive just attention and they get it and the thing they don't realize is that they will do jail time for the attention.I think that people are lashing out at the government and the people that they think help to keep the unforunate beat down to just barley surving,I really would like to know what goes through there heads at a time like that it has to be just a total clump of stuff that angers them one person probably done something to them and the rest of the world pays for it although unfair everyone has a breaking point of how much they will tolerate and then they just snap.I wish everyone luck in these times of need and remember to reach your hand out to help someone today,it just might help.Have a great day.
