An internet failure caused widespread shutdowns in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain Pakistan and India. Some businesses were out of commission, and India is worried about the National Stock exchange. Internet, phone and television were out in some areas and were expected to take up to two weeks to be repaired. That is the scariest thing...the story line of bad movies! It would be devastating if something happened like that here in the US! http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/01/31/dubai.outage/index.html

what caused this widespread shutdown? i would like to know what caused it. because if we know what caused it, then it becomes preventable and avoidable. although i think no one is immune or safe with technology, it is the risk that we have to take. it is unimaginable to happen in the US, but who knows?

I have heard of this bad news. I hope this can be fixed soon. In fact the internet connection between Asia and American had broken few times before. It was so inconvenient at that time as we couldn't connect the USA websites.

I heard it on the news several days ago about two undersea cables between the Middle East and Europe being cut, disrupting internet traffic to some countries. I remember hearing that the problem would take at least 1.5 weeks to be resolved. If countries that rely on traffic through these cables cannot get the disrupted traffic rerouted through other parts of the network, then businesses in these countries that rely heavily on the availability of the internet to operate will find their operations severely hampered, and who knows, this may devastate the companies and cause them to go out of business. It sure is scary for companies to be unexpected hit in this way, because there will be no warning given.

I cant imagine this happening here. Interenet failure would just casue so mny things to fail, the lights may aswell go out. I remeber back to last winter when my city was hit with a bunch of wind storms and there were massive blackouts. The worst part was that not even after a day of lights being out people were literally going crazy. On the news there were countless stories of people filling supermarkets that were still open buying water and bar essnetials. This wasnt the worst part however what was most shocking is that after onyl a few hours without powere people were fighting in the parking lots over water that was sold out in an instant.

You bet it would be scary and disastrous. We are a world that has become so technology dependent, that any failure would be a night mare or a horror movie.

Wow, that is just insane! I can't believe that happened. It's hard to believe taht a nation's internet can go down leaving businesses and some phone and television were out in some areas. Hard to fathom in this day and age! Sometimes I wonder how we got along before the internet and phone!

Hi estherlou! That would be a disaster if it will be truly widespread. Although it has crippled two continents already, I hope it would be repaired the soonest possible because it will somehow affect the global economy somehow. Just my thoughts. take care and have a nice day! :)

We're not insulated... we will feel repercussions from this. This is the world-wide web, and any disruption carries through many lives, families, businesses, schools, etc. Many small things that become a large wave... I hope its fixed very soon!!
