Can you use regular detergent in a front load washing machine?

I just got my new front load washer and dryer yesterday. We bought them a month ago but they just got delivered. I never thought I could get so excited about doing laundry! Anyways, when we bought them I asked the salesman if you had to use special detergent in the front loading machines and he said no. He said that you just have to use 1/3 of the amount that you usually use of your regular detergent, but in the instructions for the machine it says that you have to use the low sudsing detergent. Anyone know if you can use your regular detergent?

Yes, you can use regular detergent. But you really DO need to use about 1/3 to 1/2 the detergent you would use in a top loader. Start out using 1/3 of what you used to use, and then if you feel that your not getting the suds or your clothes aren't clean increase it a little until you get what works best with your detergent and your machine.

Thank you so much! I just needed someone else to agree with what the salesman said before I went out and bought new detergent and had to get rid of the old stuff. Thanks again, you saved me a trip out tonight!

Why not make your own detergent. I've been using homemade laundry detergent for a little over a year with my front loading machine. It works pretty well. Here's my findings after a year: http://www.blulow.com/2008/07/21/homemade-laundry-detergent-experiment/

I keep reading that you must use the HE detergent in these machines. I am thinking of purchasing one at the moment but so unsure. Are you still happy with the machine? what brand and model did you purchase? I think I would use the special detergent rather than risk ruining such an expensive appliance. there is a chance that the salesman just wants to make the sale and is not concerned about what happens after you get the machine home. I am told if you use regular detergent you are asking for gunk build up, machine break down, and mold growth.
