Plastic Baby Bottles & BPA's

Headline news last night. Warning for all Mothers using plastic BABY BOTTLES! Brands such; as "Born Free," "Gerber & Playtex." leach excessive amounts of BPA into the supplements to you are feeding your baby. Be it milk, Mother's milk, formula or juice. These plastic bottles exceed the Federal guidelines of these toxins! I did not get the full name of BPA...but the first two words are Butyl Phenol ________! BPA is highly linked to Cancer & development problems because it blocks development of certain hormones & immune development. The leaching is increased ten fold when bottle is heated.

My understanding is that you should NOT use plastic in any form e.g., "sippie cups". dishes as the jury is still out on these. In Sweden have proven (scientific study) released about 3 months ago, that toxins from plastics,styro-foams are reducing the sperm count in males. And as you know, for the last 20 years there has been an extreme caution about using aluminium cookware, foil etc., it contributes greatly to Alzheimers.

I had heard this before, and it is terrible. Imagine how many people do not have internet and do not read these types of things. I can't believe that the physicians do not tell their new mothers these things. I know many people who plop their baby bottles into the microwave for warming and who use plastic baby bottles. Such a shame that we don't come out big against this.

Once again I think BIG BROTHER is NOT watching over us! All the plastic companies in the world are owned by the Petroleum Majors. The Major Petroleum companies also own all the pharmaceutical companies, who buy off all the Doctors with their samples! The Doctors aren't going to bite the hand that feeds them! I get so angry, but there's little I guess we can do. It's like,as we know, the world is controlled by Petroleum....and the trickle down effect is humungous. It's almost like the Doctors don't pass on this info, cause then we wouldn't have another generation of people caused serious illnesses, to keep them in business. Thank you for responding! Just a little off the topic, but I have been fighting over the Petroleum co., ownership of all the larger seed companies....their genetic modification, so that we can no longer be seed savers, what a crock. Thank you all for letting me vent. Smiles!!

I've heard of this. There's more to it than that. Microwaves increase the leaching even more. never use a microwave to warm the bottle. I'm sure everyone knows that, as tempting as it is at 3 am. there's more than just bottles. it's toys, pacifiers, food storage containers, etc. it's a molecule in hard plastic called BISPHENOL A, or BPA. In 2006, this molecule was banned from San Fransisco. BPA can cause dangerouse hormornal changes in children. How do you know if it's on the product? Some will have a number 7 on it. those are usually on the strong plastics; i.e, waterbottles, baby bottles, and the lining of canned foods. The FDA will say that this BPA is safe. But many scientists say it may bring alot of harm: cancer, early puberty, obesity, and A.D.D. even though your plastics say Dishwasher Safe or Microwave Safe, don't do it. It will cause the chemical to not only go into your food, but into the air. You'll be breathing it in and your skin will soak it up. And your body will think it's a natural hormone estrogen, ladies. and if you're pregnant, it will go through the placenta and harm your baby.

Thank you for filling in the blanks. I just caught the last of it on the 6pm news, but couldn't stay awake for the 11pm. A couple of months ago, I saw a similar report from Sweden on bottled water(plastic) and styrofoam cups. I once again, thank you....Avoid anything with #7 on it?

avoid the #7 on anything that you're going to put food and drink in. glass bowls w/ lids are still good food storage containers. avoid saran wrap, too. don't ever heat your food up w/ plastic wrap on it.

I have received this information via email. I have stopped drinking mineral water from plasticbottles. I have opted to buy them in glass bottles. It is much safer that way. I hope that a law would be enforced to request manufacturers producing liquids in glass bottles insead of plastic ones.

I so hear you, ronaldinu,....I cannot understand why glass is not used, always! Each time another plastic bottle (all single use) is manufactured there is a glut of toxic chemicals pumped into the air, not to mention the use of petroleum products! All glass bottles need is sterilization, and they're good to go, used many times over. Then if recyled, the plastic has to be melted down to be re-used again. That is not my opinion of recycle and re-use!

I just made a discssion about this as well.. but its three months later and they have now pulled all the bottles cointaining the chemial off the shelves. and have been refunding money as they come in for store credits. Here is a list of safe ones if you are interested, as well as a little more information about the chemical. I was shocked to find out its also in our canned foods!! http://safemama.com/2007/11/22/bpa-free-bottle-and-sippy-cup-cheat-sheet/

Thanks for responding! We now have legislation in motion to ban any plastics with BP 3 or 7! That includes most of the plastic waters that are so in vogue! And yes, 95% of canned foods are lined with BP 3 or 7!
