For all those that should know better but sometimes don't......

We are looking waiting for a snow event to hit PA, and they are predicting ice on top of the snow. So do yourself and law enforcement, emergency personnel, and PennDot a favor....if they advise that you stay at home unless it is an emergency, that is what they mean! Getting stranded or worse yet involved in an accident is not worth the birthday party you might miss, or that new dress you just have to have, or the kids screaming for McDonald's. Whenever you drive on bad road conditions, it's not just your life that you are putting in danger, it is the cops and other emergency personnel that will have to risk their A$$ to save yours! Think before you start up that vehicle, can this wait?

You know, not going out in bad weather is just a matter of common sense, if you don't have to -- don't go. I have to go to work today, but my husband is driving me, he has 4 wheel drive, I only have front wheel. My job has no tolerance for people not coming in and the previous shift can't leave until the next one comes in, which does make sense, I work in a group home. But then they buy these homes that are in the middle of nowhere, I actually get to go down a one lane dirt road for about 2 miles to get there. I have to wonder what they are thinking other then cost.

Well, I am from Buffalo, NY so snow to me is no biggie to deal with, it is the people that are not used to driving in snow that cause the problems. Hubby had surgery about a month ago and he loves to use 4 wheel drive, so for me to say yes to him driving puts a smile on his face. Fire fighter for our trees..that is a cool job - well I guess it can get to be pretty hot ..but if you got your dream job..then it is awesome. Where in PA are you? most of it is pretty wooded

I'm in North Central Pa. I love it here, it is so different from the South and it has beautiful countryside.

If I have to go anywhere in the snow, it waits til he gets home, even though I do have a blazer with 4 wheel drive, I have only lived up here 3 years, and I know my limitations, and I'm not going to put myself or someone else in danger. Glad your husband can take you, I know how it goes with a job like that. Luckily, I got hired for my dream job last year, and we are seasonal, so I'm off work from December to mid March, I work for the forestry service, wildland firefighter.

That is one thing I don't miss about PA. But living there for 36 years, I knew better than to go out in bad whether, I never thought something was worth risking my life for or even others. I remember times when a snow storm would hit after I was already at work. I worked in a mall and I couldn't believe how many people would come there to go shopping in bad whether. The ones that really got to me would be the ones who dragged their babies and small children out in the whether just because they wanted to go shopping. The epitomy of stupidy. I used to call all my employees and tell them not to come in if the roads were bad, I didn't think it was worth their lives for a minimum wage job.

catchin a shovel full - she loves when we shovel the snow
Good for you, now if only other people would think like that. I have only lived up here 3 years, and moving here from the south, I just make plans to stay home, I don't drive in the snow or ice. I can't say I don't go out........my dog loves the snow!

Here in the South, I guess because I am so used to snow and ice, I find it quite odd when they cancel school for flurries. Although it makes my daughter happy. We did have a little snow this year, which I didn't mind, it was pretty and I do miss how it looks. I really didn't mind snow when I didn't have to go anywhere, except when I had to shovel it, I certainly don't miss that part.

As a fellow Pennsylvanian I'd like to second your advice! It never fails, whenever we have even a minor snow or ice even here there are multiple crashes, most of which could easily have been avoided if everyone would have followed your advice and if they HAD to go venture out on the roads if they'd all just drive sensibly. Obviously there are always innocent victims who did nothing wrong themselves but got hit by someone else but there's always someone who has no respect for the elements and thinks they can drive just as fast on snow or ice-covered roads as they can when it's high and dry. Give me a break - the life or vehicle you save may be your own! Annie

Thank you for your response. I've only lived up here 3 years, but I know my limitations and I'm not going to test my driving skills on snow or ice. My s/o has lived here all his life, and he's staying at his mom's tonight, so he didn't have to drive over the mountain to get home.

I've lived here my entire life but I also learned my own limitations years ago when I had an accident on an icy road. I wasn't afraid of driving in any kind of weather before that but now you would think I just moved here from the south! It's always smart and makes sense to stay somewhere else when possible rather than travel in the bad weather. You possibly heard about the huge pile-up on I-81 two days ago where a woman was killed. That's so sad and it probably could easily have been prevented. Annie

This is true, there are a lot of trips that are not necessary, that people don't need to be out in that type of weather! I've been up there where it gets bad, and I always parked when it did, and didn't take any chances!

Well it's 2:07 am here in philadelpia pa. We didn't get much snow here not even an inch. Alot of sleet and freezing rain though. It's still a sheet of ice and I am sitting here wondering if there will be school this morning for my son. Bridges closed because of the fast freezing ice and penn dot seemed to not be able to keep up with it here in phila. There were many accidents. One that even involved 12 accidents. If anyone has to drive this morning please be safe and take extra caution..

I'm located north of Hamburg, as of 5pm last night we had 3 inches of snow, and it's looking like we got a real good coating of ice on top of the snow during the night.

The place I work at never closes because of snow. However I guess if they advise people not to and only for emergencies then they will have to close. I love snow. But I hate having to drive in it. So if I don't have to go driving in it I won't.
