Sundials based on the sun's shadow was one of the main sources of telling time in ancient times. I actually wanted to learn how to make a sundial. I have found instructions on the Internet how to do it. You can look it up under "How to Make a Sundial".

Chinese ancient people use sun to time. They invented a machine called Rimin to time , which is very correct. The mistake of Rimin is only less than 5 minutes comparing to a modern clock. There is still a Rimin in Forbiden City. If you go on a tour to China, you can have a look at it.

The ancient people used to study the sky. They follow the rise of sun at day time. The position of stars on sky at night tells them about the time and also about the changing seasons. Changing position and shape of Moon also used to tell them about the dates and time to the ancient people. The farmers of ancient age needed to keep track of time. They had to know that when to plant their crops. They took all information from changing season’s climate on earth.

I am pretty sure they told time by the position of the sun in the sky and also the moon and stars at night. As the seasons change so does the position of the stars in the night sky and the moon and the sun. They were well tuned to the differences and could tell when it was. They could tell what time of the day it was because of the position of the sun in the sky. They also used sundials which are like primitive clocks that would allow them to guage where the sun was in the sky by the shadow it cast on the ground.

I can't but my husband always amazes me with this. We will be out someplace and he will look up at the sky and look over at me and say it is a certain time and every single time he has been right.

I don't think that I could tell the time without a watch. Time passing is a hard concept to realize I think. I would wake up when it is light and go to bed when I felt tired and it was dark. I would eat when I felt hungry. I don't think I would know which month it was but I might guess which season it was. I think ancient people used the sun to tell them the time of the day.

I visited Laos in East Asia last winter, and was surprised that no one thought about the time.If we said," We'll be ready By 8 am!" they would be there to pick us up by 8.30 or 8.45. and never a word about being late. Its a very interesting concept, but time really doesn't exist unless we make it so. In the developed countries no one has time for anything extra. In Laos (one of the poorest countries in the world) everyone has time for everything. We never saw anyone in a hurry, and people in the street were standing around talking to their neighbors. Its a very friendly place and there is plenty of time to have fun.

How ancient?? If you go way back I don't think the time of the day really concerned them!! :)
