What kind of fish?

I have an empty 35 gallon fish tank. I still haven't figured out what kind of fish would be perfect to get at this time. The tank has been cycled and is ready for fish. Please leave me your suggestion of tropical fish and tell me why I should consider them first?

Well, I don't know much about fish, but one thing I do know is that you want something that will swim around the tank, not just sit there. I wouldn't want aggressive fish either, they tend to eat/attact other fish. Good Luck

I completely agree, as my daughter's swordtail is always moving, so they will have to compete with her to eat. Thanks for the reply.

A pair of angelfish would go good in that tank nicely. They swim around and eagerly swim up to the glass when you come near the glass to feed them and if you wound up with a breeding pair that would even give you something more interesting to watch, the parental care of the cichlids. Angelfish come in so many different colors now that you might have trouble picking out your favorite color of angelfish. There is also the standard fins and the long fins as well as pearl scale and non pearl scale to chose from. Good luck in which ever type of fish that yo get for your tank. Be sure to let us know what you finally decide on putting in your tank.

Thanks and somebody suggested that I breed several kind this morning. I will have to cycle a couple tanks with my Endler's first, as I have several empty tanks in the garage. I will post which kind I start with first, as the office tank needs a couple more fish first.

Your tank is not cycled unless you are feeding the good bacteria with ammonia as fish do by releasing their wast materials into the tank. I think that you mean that the tank is set up and ready to start cycling. Without the tank being cycled, your fish will give off ammonia (which is harmful to the fish). There are bacteria that will convert this ammonia to nitrite (which are also harmful to fish) and then another group of bacteria will convert this nitrite to nitrate (which is not too harmful to fish in smaller doses). So once you put fish in your tank the ammonia levels will raise high until enough bacteria breaks it down to nitrite. When the ammonia starts to come down then the second types of bacteria will convert the nitrite to nitrate but in the meantime the nitrite levels will climb skywards. After the nitrites have come down to zero (along with the ammonia level) you tank will then be considered to be cycled. As far as to what kind of fish that you should put in there, let us know what kind of fish that yo like and we can then let yo know more about that fish(es) so that you can make a better educated guess of what kind of fish will be best for you.

The tank isn't really empty, but this topic was added because my husband said "your office tank looks empty". It has one fish a Silver Swordtail now. There use to be 20 Endler's Livebearers with her, but they went into a larger tank. She has been in the tank for about 5 months, as she was out in the pond for the summer and as you know all my live bearing fish must be able to go outside into the ponds. The only tank that runs year round is the Catfish. I'm willing to put a heater on one pond, if the fish can't tolerate 65 to 70 degrees the normal temperature outside. I have had many kinds of live bearers over the years including Guppies, Mollies, Wags and Swordtails. I'm really looking for a little harder tropical fish that I wouldn't consider without somebody suggesting the fish. I don't want anymore Goldfish, as you know I have two ponds that rescued ones live in until homes are found for them. I do have 1 tank of Albino Catfish and will never get another one. I have never seen an egg in the tank and they have been up day and night really makes the tanks near them nervous. I don't think they ever sleep. In case your wondering where are all the rest of my fish sold over 1500 fish last year just looking for new ideas for fish I should consider, as my clients are always looking for something different. Thanks for the help.
