Mysterious Workplace Illness

I recently came across an article regarding a mysterious illness affecting some workers in plants where they are processing pork:
Workers in pig slaughterhouses in both Indiana and Minnesota are being afflicted with an illness called progressive inflammatory neuropathy — symptoms range minor weakness and numbness to full-on paralysis. And as if a mysterious neurological disorder popping up in a food processing plants weren't disturbing enough, what the Centers for Disease Control has identified as the suspected cause of the disease is equally unnerving. Read on if you dare (and don't say I didn't warn you!).
It seems the workers who are affected work with the head of the pigs performing a process that uses an air compressor which blows the brains out of the head resulting in dispersal of some of the material around the workers. As a result, it is noted that the plants have discontinued the process. One of the reasons the article gave for the situation not being made so public is due to the fact that all of the victims of this mystery illness are undocumented workers who cannot realistically raise the alarm. I think this is terrible. What are your feelings on this situation?

This is really disgusting...like my question is, why do they have to "blow out" the brains of pigs in the first place, and what does this say about the general safety of pork to begin with? I feel for the workers, particularly the illegals who because of their status can't say a darn thing about it. I read part of the article about this and it said that the hogs are processed mainly for meat products like Spam

Alas, pyewacket, it would seem that we are taking our lives into our hands every time we pick up a fork and a knife these days. I wish they could come up with a substitute for eating. I don't trust anything that's out there anymore.

I also think it is terrible. I cannot imagine doing that as a job. I wonder what the disease is caused from. I makes you wonder if the animals have some kind of disease, or is it the way they are processing them.

The article stated that the material that comes into contact with human skin is so similar to what is found in the human body that it reacts to it by trying to fight it off.

I don't know what to say it sounds horrible, workers should be protected by the law and illegals are not supposed to be hired either/

Exactly, winterose! That is the reason we are not seeing a loud hue and cry over this situation. I say shame on those people for not abiding by the laws.

This is very alarming I think. It seems the food industry is playing with their workers lifes as well the consumers.
I think they need stricter regulations and control. Everytime you turn around, there is a new scandal out there revolving around food.
It seems to be the safest thing to eat is, well, hmmmmm nothing?
