I asked my step daughter, who is 25 years old, if she was going to be home for supper tonight, because she is usually late for supper and I like to know. She tells me she won't be home till very late because she is going to the theatre to watch a play. I say good for her. I have never seen a live play and I would love to but it just costs way too much for our budget. It cost about $50 a ticket and so it is our of our budget range. But what I don't understand is how can she afford to go? We pay her univercity tuition and we pay for all her books and her car insurance and gas money and such things. She has a part time job so she makes a little bit of money but not much, maybe $100 a week, so how is it she can afford to spend $50 for a ticket to go see a play. Soo I have to admit I am a little bit jealous that she can go but we can't go because of money issues. Anyways, that's not what this discussion was supposed to be about. What I wanted to know is, have you ever been to a play? Have you wanted to go see one?

I've been to lots of plays and really have enjoyed them. They don't fit my budget either, but there are ways to see them more cheaply. Sometimes there are local theatre groups who charge very little, so whenever I hear of those, I go and see whatever they're performing. I've been to many high school plays as well, and while they aren't as experienced the plays are still interesting. When I was in college, whatever was playing there usually cost $50-100 a ticket. If you showed up a few minutes after the play started, whatever seats were left were sold for $5 or $10. There are a lot of plays I saw, but missed the very beginning! LOL

My step son graduated from Ithaca College in New York state with a Bachalor of Arts in Performing Art 3 years ago. We went to Canton, Ohio (3 hr trip) to a play that he was in. It was my first play ever. It was called "Georges by Gershwin". It was a musical dinner theater. $42.50 a ticket for dinner and show and $25 for just the show. We went to 'just' the show. Shaun played Fred Astaire. It was absolutly wonderful and I cannot wait to do it again. Our income is limited because of being on Social Security, but it was well worth the money because it was a good time.

I have been to many plays, operas and musicals. My parents use to take us all the time when I was younger, then I started going on my own, and I have taken my son to a few. The last cultural even I went to was a night with the New Orleans Orchestra and that was pretty good. The last opera/musical I saw, I think was Phantom of the Opera (I have seen that a few times). That is my fave opera that I have seen on stage. I know a lot of people like Cats and I didn’t enjoy that at all. The last play I saw was Othello.

I have been to lots of plays, operas, concerts and some other big shows. I think it depends on a person's priorities. When first married we were university students, very little money, bare bones apartment and budget meals but we set aside some money for theatre and music events. Some friends who had jobs and money always said they could not afford it but their priorities were different. Their interest lay elsewhere, other things were important to them. I understand that. My kids were also brought up to enjoy cultural events. It stayed with them and is now important in their lives. Since I am retired now and on a budget I can't afford many such outings . I don't want or need any more material goods so my kids give me a theatre ticket or invite me to a spectacle (the last one the Lord of the Rings in the Princess Margaret theatre in Toronto) for my birthday or for Christmas. The last big show I saw was around Christmas. I must brag about it because whenever I think of it I still get goosebumps. It was Andrê Rioux, a Dutch violinist and orchestra. I was not familiar with his music. My second cousin gave me a ticket ($ 100) for Christmas and I went with a group of relatives. The concert was in the Skydome in Toronto that holds 35 000 people. It was sold out. Andrê played European music and operetta tunes. He also had three tenors. It was all very pleasant but what blew me off was the finale. He had basically hired most of the pipes and drummers from Ontario. They marched in by the hundreds from three entrances, they kept coming and coming, filled the stage, filling the aisles, filling the the space in front of the stage. Well, 35 000 people jumped to their feet and cheered them. I have never seen anything like this before. It will stay with me for a long time.

Wow, are you sure the ticket is $50? I thought it was a bit pricy for tickets to the murder mystery I'm in ($25) but, that also includes dinner. Local community theaters are usually about $10 for just a show. Also, I noticed an earlier response, and agree...maybe a date is paying for the ticket?

I have been to may theater plays in my life, saw at least 400 plays, i also enjoy the opera and concerts. i know that tickets here don't cost that much, so many people here go regularly to plays and other kind of culture shows. i do hope that you would get to go some day, i am sure you will enjoy it. and maybe your step daughter has been offered to go to a play by a nice boy, that is also paying for it. that should be nice:)
