When You're at Work, Do You Hear...

other people's conversation when they are on the phone? If so, does it affect your concentration at work? We are indeed very packed in our cubicles and very often, I could hear other people's phone conversation without effort. Sometimes if I am writing an important email, I admit that my chain of thoughts would be disturbed by my dear colleagues' voices. But most of the time, I can carry on what I am doing without problem.

yo will get use to it and that's how it is in a cramp environment, you will learn to block them later on and mind your own work. it is pretty annoying at times specially if your co worker talks so loud that you can't even hear yourself talking.

Oh I hope someone would learn that trick and block out other people's noises instead of complaining them.

I once worked in what they call a "bull-pen" and no there were nocows, but what I mean is 70 women all worked in one room with no dividers and answered customer's phone calls. There was a chalk board where the supervisors wrote a list of our "talk-times" as in addition to helping the customers we were supposed to manage the calls by keeping them within a parameter of an average 180 seconds per call. Time was money. The hardest thing was keeping the shouting voices of the other workers from distracting the customer as sometimes it got so loud in there the person on the other end of the line could hear it. We just had to tune it out. But I do my best thinking in complete silence.

Hi, I work in an office with another girl, she's always chatting away to other members of staff and will carry on at the same volume regardless of whether I'm on the phone or doing some audio typing. It's really annoying sometimes and I have pulled her up a few times on this!

I will be disturbed as well unless I don't understand the language that my colleague speaks.

I tend to write or type what I hear, so that would be a problem for me. I'd have to bring earplugs and make people yell if they were talking to me.

i do. its because there are two telephones that are near my desk. i hear everything they talk about unless they would really lower their voice or if very absorbed on what i am doing or if i choose to ignore them. but there's this one officemate, who is actually my worst enemy, who is really annoying when talking on the phone and who could bother me even if i'm far from my desk. its because she's just too loud! and she laughs like an evil witch. just yesterday she was talking with someone over the phone and i was two tables away from my desk and yet, i can hear her annoying voice! i just wish that there would come a time that my boss would catch her making noise inside the office. .

Hello wondericequeen, I can clearly hear others conversation. I don't like it either but sometimes, I just don't have any choice. Some of them speak so loud that I can hear every details of the conversation. But sometimes whenever my colleagues keep engaging on the phone for too long, I am interested to know the details of their conversation Just kidding!
