A jar contains 40 to 50 marbles. If the marbles are taken out of the jar 3 at a time, 2 marbles will be left. If the marbles are taken out 5 at a time, 4 marbles will be left, so the question is, how many marbles are in the jar?

This means that the total number of marbles is not divisible by 3 nor 5.
If the marbles are taken out of the jar 3 at a time, 2 marbles will be left.
This means that ones digit must be...
Any number...
If the marbles are taken out of the jar 5 at a time, 4 marbles will be left.
This means that the ones digit must be either...
9
0r
4
Because the only numbers that are divisible by 5 ends in 5 or 0. The remainder is 4 so, we need to add the 4 to 0 and 5.
Then, use the trial and error method...

Okay, there are 44 marbles...
Because...
If the marbles are taken out 3 at a time and 2 will be left, we must first subtract 2 from 44.
44 - 2 = 42
Then, let's divide it by 3.
42 / 3 = 14

If the marbles are taken out 5 at a time and 4 marbles will be left, we must first subtract 4 from 44.
44 - 4 = 40
Then, let's divide it by 5.
40 / 5 = 8

So, there, there are, a total of 44 marbles.
