Why do people laugh

When someone passes gas? I have never understood this. It isn't really funny, is it?
I used to think it was a societal thing, that we have been conditioned to think it was funny. But the other day I was changing my son's diaper and he passed gas while his diaper was off, and it cracked him up. I'm laughing now just thinking about it. I had to laugh at him, because it was so adorable the way he laughed. He wasn't taught that- he really thought it was funny.
And so do millions of other people. I've heard references to it on TV shows and in stand up comedy routines. Why is is funny? Can you enlighten me?

I think it is funny because the sound itself may be considered funny. Also I think some people think that it is fun when other people is not in controle of themselves.
Me - I do not think it is funny. I think it is kind of rude. Unless people cannot help it.

I don't see why it is rude- it is a natural body function that everybody does. But I don't necessarily think it's funny either.

Sometimes it's better to laugh it off i reckon. I don't see the humor in it, but a lot of men do. LOL! They think it's hilarious to pass gas and then people either 1) trying to figure out who did it if it wasn't loud, or 2) they laugh because it was loud and they are either embarrassed or very proud of it. I've never understood it myself, but i really think it's a man thing. God bless

Yes, I suppose it could be from embarassment for some people.

Did you read the discussion, or just the title? The discussion asks a specific question that you did not address.

I honestly think it's because for so long it was something you didn't talk about, kinda of taboo. But in society now it is acceptable.
I know we have lots of conversations about it at our house. My husband is the only male in the house and I guess that is how he reminds us of that. In the house it is okay, outside the house I try to keep my girls in check. My 6 year old is very sharp witted and quick and she and her dad really go round and round about it.
I substitute teach in an elementary school and when a student passes gas and other start laughing I tell them to stop because we all do it. It's only natural.
What really got me was when Nick (cable channel) did a whole commercial on why people pass gas. You can just tell how society has changed.
I can remember my mom always deny that she ever did pass gas. My husband said he always wanted to ask her how did she stay so skinny if she didn't. LOL

Yes, well, 'ladies' could never admit that they have normal body functions like everyone else does. But that's another way society has changed. People aren't as afraid to admit that they do it. I really don't see what the big deal is, why people are so afraid of someone finding out that they may pass gas once in a while.

I think that we laugh at things that are absurd... they catch us off guard...that is why jokes are funny... we did not expect the punch line.
that is why we laugh at a toddler's first steps - we get such joy out of it - but the movements are absurd.
I think that is a cute story about your baby, maybe it tickled?

Dear Sillychick,
It is another gift of God for human, the feelings we have inside is shown through expressions, we laugh when something inside us felt it might be funny, it is to be enjoyed, the expressions of enjoyment is one like laughing, so they expressed their expression may be that might had felt funny for them moreover it is expression of innocence too a child's act made them laugh.

I agree that passing gas isn't something that should be considered as something to laugh about, however there are some instances where it is funny. Like this morning, my husband was holding our six month old daughter and was resting her on his lap, said "Houston, in three, two, one, blast off!" And lifted her up. But right when he lifted her up and after he said "blast off" our daughter let out the loudest chain of farts we have ever heard come out of her. The timing was perfect and it was just hilarious. Instances like those are pretty funny, but I do agree that when adults or older children do it, it's not something that should be laughed about, but it's not something to be scorned or looked down upon. It's a natural bodily function, and as long as you're polite, it should be okay. You can actually hurt your body if you try to hold them in.

It is just funny, we are terrible in our house for finding it highly amusing, there is only one of mine that really hates it and thats my 6 year old son, if he does it and anyone laughs he goes mad! He always has from being tiny. My daughter on the other hand is 2 and she will make a great show out of it, I tell her she is common and just like me, she certainly isnt shy about it and thinks its all highly amusing.

I think, for the babies, it's more of a basic thing. They don't have the ability to see the humor, if we haven't already shown them. They do, after all, take their cues from us. So, if you haven't shown him that passing gas is funny, then it's probably a basic thing. The sound and the feeling of relief when the gas bubble is gone is probably enough to make a baby laugh.
My seven month old son, however, has been shown that it's funny. My husband and I always laugh at him when he does it. Of course, my husband and I also find it funny when we do it. Hey, it's a natural thing, everybody does it, and I'm tired of people making it out to be a bad thing. Why condemn other people for NOT being ashamed of a bodily function when you yourself do it? (Of course, like most things in life, there are times when it's appropriate, like in public.)
I'd love to see someone with gas try and make it to a bathroom before releasing it! Now THAT'S funny!

Maybe we laugh because of the sound as the gas passes, or maybe because of the smell. I do not know the reason why people laugh at it.
I do not find it funny though, because for me it's a natural thing for everybody.

Yes, you are right sillychick (referring your username), farting or tooting is a completely natural process and there is nothing to laugh at it. In your case too, you did not laugh at the farting, you laughed because you found the child's laugh very adorable. We all laugh at farting or on hearing the sound during our childhood and slowly become rational and learn it as a bad habit to do it or laugh at it.
Lets take your example here. Your child has just seen the world. His body is tender and so are his nerves. Because of this, the child has a greater sensation in his body when he farts. Moreover, he feels relaxed when the bad air goes away and feels lightened. Children communicate more through emotions and thus he expresses it through his emotion (laughter).

Well, I guess that is how our body most is program to do when we see or feel something funny. Maybe we have this design or genetic thing in all of us to laugh when its funny and to cry when its sad. Basically, it really nice to laugh since its healthy. I have read an article that it takes more effort to cry or be sad than to smile. Thus it would be more tiresome to frown than to laugh. So let go ahead, laugh and be happy!

Ido not think it one bit funny at least not for the poor person who did the fart. I can not stop it when it happens to me and am so embarrassed when that evokes gales oflaughter from others. If it was something that I did on purpose or that I could stop it then maybe they had the right to laugh but no I think the laughing people are being damned right rude.
