My cousin Gilbert and his wife are having a problem. It's there little boy. He's about 2 years of age. The doctor told them that their boy is 10 weeks behind on words. He won't even say mama or dada. However he points at things he wants, he knows what things are, but he won't say anything. Strangly he has spoken only to my husband and I, but all he says is hello, goodnight and goodbye. What could be the problem?

My sisters second son didn't speech much when he was younger. When my sister questioned the doctor to see if there was something wrong the doctor told her it was because his older brother did all the talking from him. My sister found that hard to believe because he didn't talk even when the older child wasn't present. It took her several doctors later to finally find out what was wrong with him. My nephew had a growth on his growing stem which prevented him from being able to talk. He finally got diagnosed when he was about four years old. He spent several years in speech therapy but now you can barely tell that he ever had a speech delay. I am not saying that this is what is wrong with your cousins child. But I would suggest for her to take him to a speech therapist. A speech therapist can test your cousins child to see what kind of help they can provide.

Boys do talk later than girls. I would not be a lot preoccupied about it. My son started to talk late around 3 and now he is a chatterbox. He cannot stop talking!

It could be nothing. My son is 3 1/2 and I am around a lot of kids in this age range. It seems to me that little boys just seem to do things in their own time. One thing that comes to mind, if he gets what he wants by just pointing he may not see the need in speaking. They should make him develop a word even if it is 'his own word' for things he wants before they give it to him. .... just a thought.
