Quebec Baby Bonuses to return

Quebec wants to encourage its French population to have more children to avoid the "annihilation" of the French culture and language. Would you have kids just because you were being paid to do so? Is that fair to kids? What happened to letting a couple grow their own family, the size they desire, just because they want to share their love? The way it works is that a couple is paid a lump sum at birth of each of their children, and the amount increases with each subsequent child. That means that a couple with four or more children is collecting a pretty big amount, not only at birth but also once a month until the children turn 18. The "child allowance" is supposed to help families with the cost of groceries and clothing. Of course this is needed in many families with lower incomes, and it is somewhat of an alternative to total dependence on social aid. To be honest, I am not sure, but I think it's based partly on the families incomes too, at least I hope so. I don't remember now as I am not collecting anymore for my kids. My ex husband and his wife have the allowance for my kids since they have custody. My stepson just turned 18 a year ago so the payments here stopped. We do notice a difference because we were using the money to clothe my stepson, and since he doesn't have a job yet, ...well, you know I am sure that this is putting a strain on our finances. He IS trying to look for a job now, and he has gone back to adult education to finish his high school diploma, so I have a little hope, but that is another discussion.

It has been proven time and time again that with social measures like this, it is not the wealthy that have more kids, but the poorer families. Sad to see that.

It doesn't matter who is having babies just to get paid, it's always sad to see.

In the rest of Canada, we had the family allowance. It was non-taxable until in Trudeau's reign, there was talk about the wealthy banker's wife. Now we all know that there are husbands who are Scrooges and so even if the wealthy banker had a wife, not all of them were generous with the money they gave to their wives. Anyway what I mean to say that except for the aid for dependent children in the States, paying people to have children does not work. People in Canada are having less children because they except the government to pay for them, and they figure is they have more than two, then that is too many. So the family allowance does not work and neither will the Quebec plan. You have to increase the deductions, and make having children a joy not the means to having someone pay for their upkeep.

In my opinion it is wrong for people to have the kids just to get the money. Also it is wrong for the government to offer people money so they will be inspired to have more kids. Money always messes up motives.

I live in Quebec also (Montreal) and i know what you're talking about . It is wrong if people have children just to collect more money off of the governement, but for those of us, who have children because we want to have children and grow our families, that governement help is very much appreciated! Because with today's salaries and the high cost of life, for those of us who are part of the average class, let's face it, our salaries are just not enough!

Isn't it kind of redundant that we pay into taxes to the government and then the government gives the money back in the forms of various benefits including child bonuses and family allowances? And has anyone ever stopped to wonder why poorer people tend to have more kids than working families? Must have something to do with lacking work to go to, so they occupy their time another way.

We have a similar system in Australia. You get a baby bonus when you have a baby, an extra bonus when your baby has completed their immunisation and a fortnightly payment to cover the costs of raising the baby. The trouble is that a lot of young girls go and get pregnant thinking they will have a lot of money coming and instead of using it for the baby they spend it on themselves. They are then paid by the government fortnightly to live and don't have to get a job. I think that if it was only given to couples and not single mums it would stop a lot of this but that would be considered descrimination so they can't do that.

I agree with you on this. Many people take advantage of the system for various reasons. Unfortunately in the long run it is the child who suffers.
