I was wondering what all you frugalots have given up in order to counteract the impact of the recent cost of living expenses that have bombarded us all so fiercely...
dinners out, movies, bowling, long sunday drives.....
magazine subscriptions
sweet indulgences?

Lets see, we have started only flushing the toilet once per 24 hours so as to conserve water and lower the water bill.....just kidding! Ha! We did not renew our magazine subscriptions, we either read them at the library or not at all. I stopped our local paper (it was just a 'rag' about local people and very little national news) and I log in to the paper's website to see the local gossip! We go early on Tuesday morning to a small, local grocery that discounts their meat. We take advantage and buy enough for the following week and freeze it. We seldom go to a movie, instead we joined Blockbuster online. I'm telling you, if it gets much worse I really don't know how much more we can do!

I know what you mean! how much more can we cut back?
My folks live in an area that water costs around 7 cents a gallon... so they have a saying they live by...
if it is yellow, let it mellow
if it is brown, flush it down
you know, we could probably use one of those saw dust toilets - a five gallon bucket half filled with saw dust to neutralize the humanure...

To try and make ends meet we have given up cable tv service, eating out,and movies. We now only rent movies from the library where it is either free or 1.00 a movie. We no longer go for a ride just to go.We have dialed our heat down to 62 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night.

I've stopped buying books from the bookstores. They have gotten really expensive, but I will never stop reading books. I've swapped books with friends and have found an organization that has books for free. I love that place. I've also found two places on the internet that where Ican swap books. On one of them I have saved over $350.00 in books.

Modestah, you have mentioned all of them to tell you the truth. We use to take long drives, that has been cut out. We use to go indulge in the seafood buffets at least 2 times a month, now we are lucky to go once every 3 months. My 13 year old son and I use to go see movies at least 2 times a month now again it is more like one time every 3 months and we make it a block buster at that. Magazines I now down load and read online. We do not take day trips like we uses too.

I have stopped all my magazine subscriptions and have started getting them from the library.
We now only go out to the chinese buffet twice a month and that is it. Maybe a fast food meal once a month.
I stopped getting a starbucks frozen drink every time I go to Target.
Movies was thing we had already cut back on. We only go maybe once every three months, and we bring our own popcorn and candy in. We are going next week to see College Road Trip and then the new Narnia movie is coming out. Everything we else we wait for it to come out at Redbox. $1.00 a night you can't beat it.

I went to a movie on March 1st of this year for the first time in a year and a half. So I guess you could say I never really had it to give up.
I have however give up any desserts. Another mylotter told me I should definitely figure out another way to save, lol. This means buying nothing resembling a dessert at the grocery store. No sweets. It hasn't been that hard to do. I've also given up hair cuts. Now, a lot of people here know I wear a wig because a lot of my hair has fallen out. However, I cut my own hair very short to keep it comfortable. When wearing a baseball cap, no one can tell anything is wrong. But usually every 6 weeks I'll get it cut back down to the scalp. Ten bucks is ten bucks and I'm just going to wait until things are better. Although it is way longer than I want, it isn't that hard to deal with, considering the wig and everything.

We have tightened our belts an awful lot in the last few months as finanaces have become very tight indeed! We never go out for meals and very rarely go anywhere that costs money apart from special treats, we don't get take away foods etc! We are also very careful about wasting electricity/gas etc - this is partly due to finances but mainly due to environmental factors! xxx
