people that are older or who had very little growing up tend to be pack rats i believe. myself on the other hand, am not a packrat...i get rid of stuff every year and am quite good about going through my closet about every 6 months... if you are a pack rat, why do you think you are? if not, why not? i think part of the reason that i am not is because of consumerism...its easy to replace stuff, so get rid of it (if you get tired of it or whatever...)

One man's trash is another man's treasure. I always keep the stuff that I own because I value everything. Especially if I am the one who bought that thing. I don't simply dump things if there is no reason to do it in the first place. Whether it's a simple greeting card that I got for my birthday or that big box of box that i got for Christmas.

I hate collecting clutter and will get rid of stuff if I don't need it, my bedroom is small and it can easily get clutter with stuff that I don't really want. The hardest thing I have is getting rid of clothes that are old, because they are comfortable, even though they are years old I hate disposing of them, I still have a lot of brand new clothes which I haven't worn still in my wardrobes and cupboards. Yes it is easy to replace stuff and they are just material wealth easily replaced.

I am in some respects, but not in others. For example, I've worked in retail quite a bit, so have the opportunity to buy clothes at discounted prices. Often, I will go through and give away many clothes, but when it comes to things like paperwork, I'll save it forever, thinking that I'll need it for some reason or another somewhere down the line.
