setting fuel pump timing on a 97 mercedes 290 turbo diesel after a pump repair

the fuel pump had been removed because of a laeking seal ,however tho there is a master spline on the pump gear there is no master on the connecting collar or the internal gear. is a dti gauge required set in to the back of the pump to find the correct timing ? if so what procedure is required
