I really like AdBusters, a magazine I found in my local co-op store and really liked the last two issues and think I might subscribe. I also like BrainChild: the magazine for thinking moms, I love reading their 'NutShell' feature to catch up on recent happenings that affect mothers, or new laws or policy. They also have a debate every issue and thats interesting, they touch on interesting topics that you normally don't find in other parenting magazines. One of my favorites was a article called "Mother's of the Serengetti" about this introverted mother who worried that she was rubbing off on her chld and decided to be a part of the superhero 'Soccer Mom Gang' and the outcome was suprising, the articles are really funny and I like that I can count on the laugh. I read NEXUS, but not recently but still I like the in-depth articles and science I learn in it but still its not considered main-stream as they do also focus on extraterrestrials, epidemics, and secret societies, I read it every other month.

I don't know if these are considered alternative or not, but I enjoy Mother Earth News, Backwoods Home, Newsmax and Christian History and Biography. As you can see, I have a variety of interests! Most mainstream magazines become boring to me in a hurry and I hardly ever read things like Good Housekeeping or Family Circle. They're all the same thing, it seems.

I completely agree with you about mainsteam magazines, I hardly read National Geographic like I used to, I actually like the really old ones from the library from the 60s. I like Mother Earth and all the tips for living green they include. I wish I had a yard so I could try gardening, I just live in a apartment but we might be moving within the next year. It's interesting to hear about this new revolution in 'Recycled Homes' and theres a show on the science channel I think that talks about stuff like that. I am interested in history and occasionally browse Christian History and Biography for archealogical finds--you know in Turkey (where my bf is from) they are actually in the process of building a subway that goes under the sea but they ran into this great archeological find where they found a REAL OLD shipyard and they had to stop everything until everything was dug up, I think its still under way.

National Geographic is not nearly the magazine it used to be. They're just political with very little geography or anything of that nature. Our tastes must run the same. I missed that about the shipyard, I'll have to go look it up!
