One of my friends is scheduled to have lap band surgery for weight reduction on April 21. I really don't know alot about the surgery with the exception of the fact that any surgery means taking a risk. She will have to go every six weeks for a while to have the sac filled with fluid. She is very excited as she has tried many different methods for losing weight without success. I personally am a little anxious for her to have it done. Do any of you know anyone that has had this type of weight reduction surgery? What were the results and were there any side affects?

goodness,
I think about it now and again but I am too chicken to go through with it - and perhaps a bit too poor as well. I wish her all the best for the surgery and recovery and that she gets the expected results from it.
Is she going out of the country to have it done? I've heard of people going down somewhere in Central America or South America or something.

NO she is going to south dakota to have it done. Her insurance is paying for it so she doesn't have that problem. Several years ago she lost a ton of weight on weight watchers...I thought maybe she would do that again but she has gotten so heavy I think she thinks this is a quick fix....I wish she would stick to something non surgical....I don't like surgery and am always a little nervous when someone has something like this done.

I know two people who have had this surgery done. Both of them did fine with no side effects, and they've significantly reduced their weight and kept it off. You just have to be very careful to only eat a tiny amount of food at once (it'll cause pain and possible injury if you eat too much) and take lots of vitamins because you can't have as much food, so you need to get the nutrients somehow.

I know a guy that had it and he had problems with eating...he could only eat little tiny meals. He had lots of pain if he ate too much. He couldn't eat certain foods and I can't remember what they were...I think meat was hard for him to digest. He didn't have any complications but he did hit a plateau just like everyone else does. I think he lost about 100 lbs. I haven't asked him lately how he is doing now. Surgery of any kind is always a risk, I hope she has good luck. Is she from Wisconsin?

She is from Twin Lakes....she had to drvie back to Souix Falls every six weeks for adjustments. A few years back she lost alot on weight watchers.....you would think she would go back to them and do it naturally....some people don't mind surgery....I do!

I know of several who had this done and had little side effects as long as they did not eat a lot at one time. some need to take extra vitamins however and some have had infections from the surgery and others have had to have something done over so there are some risks involved.

I have a friend that did this about a year ago. It's much less dangerous than a gastric bypass and is reversible. The doc will place something like a rubber band around part of the stomach to reduce it's volume. This will cause a person to feel full quicker when eating. There are not alot of side effects with this surgery. It has worked well for my friend, she has lost about 75 lbs in a year.
