Ahhhh! SPRING in Minnesota finally. (I think) It is in the low 60's here in Minnesota today so I went out back trimming and pruning my trees and shrubs. As I neared the Honey Crisp Apple Tree I spotted a lot of buds. Now it's many months away till I get apples but I can almost taste them again. We had a field day last fall eating the apples and making things with them as well. I am so proud of ALL my gardening. It's a stress reliever for me as well. I love sitting in the sunshine doing things to improve my garden in all aspects. Do you have any tyope of fruit tree or shrubs at all in your yard/garden?

I can't wait for the wild berries to ripen. Suddenly, I have a craving for mulberries and black raspberries.

this is the area where my Red Rasberries grow. Still snow here as it is a shaded area most the day. They do great in the shade so I leave them there. The trellis and shepards hook are for them to sprawl onto.

They will return. The sticks break off
as they die to produce new sticks.

I don't even see the 2 sticks that were my red raspberries that I planted last year. I hope they come up and at least leaf out some like you said they would. Think the sticks broke off during the winter. I should of put stakes in the ground where I planted them.

I remember your garden posts from last season- I was miffed because you get your fresh fruits and veggies before me in NY.
The apples sound yum and I hope you share with your grandsons! : )
Can't wait for the pictures of them this season!

The apples aren't ready till mid October usually though. But I have ever yielding Red Rasberries that I can pick from June till Sept or later. My grandsons actually did most the picking of the apples last year. They took a bunch home as well. You know me, I'll have lots of pics of all my gardening treats etc.

Gardening is very therapeutic Bob. I have told my husband that I would like to get a community garden spot this year. We do not have enough sun in our yard to support a vegie garden. We do have many perennial beds that have sun/shade plants. He started working in the beds today and this past week. He really can't wait to get out there and put his all into it.

Oh I know all too well how theraputic it is. it is such a release for my pent up anger and any stress I've developed. I love being out there digging into the dirt etc. I can't wait to do more as well.

I've got a broceure from Bachmans on how to grow an apple tree from the seeds. So we may try that for you. But I have been asking mom about getting you one maybe from the store this fall when they are on sale. So hang in there girl. I'm trying to get mom to ask grandpa for a raise in his rent as things are really exspensive so I know he won't buy ya one. But I may just ask him anyhow.

I remember your apple tree discussions from last time. Good to see they are budding well now, as this is a sign of a good crop to come.
I have two apple trees. One is huge & very attractive. The other is not in a good position, as I think the soil underneath is too hard, or the roots may have hot bedrock.
All my other fruit trees are suffering from the drought. They badly need pruning.

Mine are actually still kind of small which is fine by me as long as they produce which they will pending any serious disease or killing frost late in May. I am glad we haven't had a serious drought.

No fruit trees here and I'm renting, so I'm limited to what I can do.
There's lots of daffodils and purple hyacinth coming up, though, and I've even transplanted some of them to the front yard, and also moved all the daylilies to another spot.
Don't know if they'll 'take' or not, but so far they all look pretty good!
Oh, and there's only lonely tulip plant out there too. No idea what color it or the daylilies will be, but I'm hoping for an explosion!

I think I have daylilies. Not sure but they are tall with yellow little floers. Hahaha! I love my apple trees and so do my daughter and 2 grandsons. Flowers look so great early in the morning in the bright sunshine.

Yes, daylilies are tall, sorta like irises. They come in all sorts of colors, but I believe the orange are most common.
When I bought the house in Zimmerman, they were alongside the garage and had reproduced considerably. I dug a lot of them out and replanted in other parts of the property and also gave a lot of them away.
They are very prolific - if you have any, you'll know it!

I am most excited because the lilacs are going to bloom soon, there are little purple buds on them and tiny yellow green heart shaped leaves opening up. I have two cherry trees, but they barely produced last year, due to a late freeze, and Jonagold apple, and some kind of pear, I just have forgotten what. The Forsythia has already bloomed. I had better go take some pictures so I can post at least one, rightZ? Hold on a minute.

I seem to have satarted something with running out to take photos here as of late. I do that a lot and did it a few times just in adding comments to my discussions today. I love that shot you got also. Nice looking and very crisp looking flower. Great job. Aren't digital cameras great? Thanks also.

It is spring here in Indiana also. It is still on the cool weather side here also. WE are afraid to start planting until they do not have any chances for a frost. You are getting me in the mood for yard work. I love to work with my yard and my garden. We always plant tomatoes, peppers, green onions and leaf lettuce. We only have a small yard so there is not much room for much else or I would have more.

We have had a few days in a row now just above normal as far as temps go. Our average for this time is 51 and today we hit 63 last I heard. So the ground is starting to thaw out just enough to remove some of the mulch. But I still have areas with snow and frozen ground. So today was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg as far as gardening goes here in Minnesota.

Your so lucky to have a garden to putter around in...sure wish I could..well, here's hoping that Law of Attraction works for me big time and can have my own home with LOTS of land to putter around in..What DID you do with all of those apples anyway? Make a lot of pies? Think you mentioned apple crisp? I made that for the first time last Thanksgiving and think will make it one of my new traditions

Well it is a LOT of work. But great exercise as well for me. But I really hate the dry hands and all. I do not wear gloves when I garden. I guess I like the dirt under the fimngernails look? We made a few batches of Apple Crisp and ate the rest. No pies. But maybe this year as we are hoping for a LOT more apples.

We have a few peach trees. All three of them have pretty pink blossoms on them right now. I think that 2 of them are still too small to produce fruit though. We will see later. Hopefully we will have a good crop of peaches this year. There are only 2 bags of peaches left in the freezer.

Only 2 bags?
This is the thrid year for our apple trees. The Harlared had 7 apples only last year but the Honeycrisp had about 100. So this year we are looking for many more on both. I have to research on how to prune them so they grow more outward than upwards. I want to be able to not have to use a big ladder to pick apples.

Hi Grandpa Bob I can almosttaste your Honeycrisp apple and they are so good. the apple and pear trees here in our complex in southern california have finally lost all their petals. I think they are ornamental fruit trees which is a shame but then I guess they would not want all one hundred twenty families here snitching fruit lol I was born and raised on a farm in South Dakota and we hadtwolarge apple and plum orchards so I was spoiled with tons of fresh fruits so when I got older and had to buy the stuff in the grocery stores lol. I still think I should use my little plot of ground and grow something.I love to garden.

We have quite a few shrubs in the garden as well as an Apple Tree and a Pear tree, both are quite young but produce plenty of fruit and the kids love it when we make pies or crumbles with the fruit! We don't get to eat all of it as Niamh is so desperate to get the fruit down usually that she will make sure that the fruit comes down before it is really ready to! lol xxx
