I think the "rule of fashion" about wearing white shoes/pants is you should only wear white between Memorial Day and Labor day (or something like that). But I think the rules really no longer apply. All winter long in fashion magazines you see the models wearing white, and lots of it. So I think it's fiction.

The rule used to be that you could wear white from Easter to Labor Day. Unless you were a nurse, white was a no no any other time. People were more formal in their dress codes years ago, but the rules have since relaxed and you can pretty much wear whatever you want, whenever you want as long as it's in good taste.
In fact, they have clothes that are labeled as "winter whites" which are a little off white actually and are specifically designed for wearing in the winter.
