This past weekend it was really beautiful and in the low 60's here in Minnesota. Buster, my loyal beagle loved it outside as I did some gardening work. I found his favorite tennis ball in the yard and we started to play fetch. Now I am trainign him to play this well with me. He does fetch the ball easily. He will drop the ball near me when I state, "Drop It". But I have a problem getting him to sit or lay down and not run when I =tell him to stay. He will if I lightly hold his collar but if I let go he runs like the dickens. I have been trying to get him to stay with this ball playing but to no avail. He does stay when I tell him at other times. But it's only with the ball play he refuses to sit. Does your dog and youreslf play fetch? Does your dog return the toy or are you playing fetch by yourself? Does he stay when you throw the ball if told to? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Not many dogs will stay its in their nature to chase that stupid ball lol. Why would you want him to stay the whole point is for him to chase the ball and get his excercise.

My dog loves to play fetch and will bring it back, but just out of reach. I tell him"I'm not playing!" and look away, and then he'll give it to me. Or I wait and hold out my hand and eventually he gives it to me. Some dogs are stubborn I guess. Sounds like your dog just loves to fetch and staying is hard to do.

Buster doesn't always drop it at my feet either. I yell "DROP IT" as he nears me hoping it will fall really close to me. Most times I have to take a step or two is all. he is getting better though. Or am I getting better? Hmmm? Maybe he IS training me? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hello Grandpa Bob! Buster is so cute! I have an Australian Shepard who loves to play fetch. She likes sticks better than a ball. I have taught her to go get the stick and bring it back to me. She is funny. She will get the stick but before I can take it from her she puts one side of the stick in her mouth so I have the other side to grab on to. She does this on her own I didnt teach her that. I always say "drop" and tell her "sit" before I throw it for her. Now she is to the point where she sets it on my lap and sits automaticly. But as soon as its thrown she is off to go get it. I havent tried to make her stay while I throw it and say "go get it" before she can go get it. Maybe I will but I doubt she will stay. She is to much of a freak about sticks like Buster and his ball. LOL! Maybe a destraction would work like a treat. Show the treat and then throw the stick/ball. Keep her/him occupied with the treat then say "go get the stick/ball". You never know it might work but probably not. ~May The Kisses Of An Angel Cover And Protect You Always~ Copper

Thanks. I love Buster. he is my best buddy. Buster will chase almost anything thrown for him. If a branch falls from the trees out back he picks them up and runs with them as well. I have tried the treats. All he wants is his treat then another one. He won't chase the ball offering him treats. Thanks bunches also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I don't have a dog right now but I do have a cat that likes to play fetch, believe it or not. She'll bring on of her toys or sometimes the ring thingie from a milk jug and lay it at my feet and waits for me to throw it, then she'll go get is and bring it back. Sometimes she tire of it quickly but other times she'll do it until my arm is ready to fall off. Annie

I've heard that when cats do that it's meant to be a "gift" for you, to show their appreciation. I've had cats that did that and my daughter's neighbor's cat, who she would give food and milk to now and then, used to bring her little gifts all the time! Annie

Our dogs will go after the ball and then not bring it back. They will wander to the other side of the yard and sit down and try to eat the ball. It is not fun playing with them.

Buster gets bored after a few times and will run after the ball and then run back without picking it up. Then I play fetch alone. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Well my dog is really into playing fetch. But He doesn't last too cause he loses interest very fast. Once he is done its like he doesn't even know how to fetch a toy anymore!! :)

Yes he does but it so happens they take the ball and run with it to go chew on it for a bit and once it's all nasty they bring it back and want me to throw it again.. I mean yuck..lol I am not touching dog spit and drool.. I do want to though get them to bring it back to me with out having me chasing them all around the yard.. Good luck huh? lol

I love this time of year for taking the dogs out and playing fetch. They just love that they're finally able to run around and enjoy the outdoors. Although I must admit my lab and terrier love winter time too! The chihuahua hates anything cold or wet. She's a summer gal! LOL Glad you take the time to enjoy your pups!

Does my dog play with balls? Does he return it? You may as well ask me if I love chocolate. My dalmation is obessed with balls.. any kind of balls. when the vet banned him from playing with balls, he proceeded to rip the fruit trees apart, as the fruit are shaped like balls. He always returns the balls. He wont follow any other commands, least of all sit. He is very disobedient. My mini fox terrier on the other hand, is not at all interested in balls. I will attach a photo of our dalmation, Max.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Our dog play fetch with me and my husband and our dogs do fetch the ball and dropped them infront of us. They don't want to sit either unless they got tired waiting for me to throw the ball again. I guess, our dogs just don't want to stay or sit because they want to play fetch over and over again. Just my thoughts dear. Take care and have a nice day! :)

yeah once I start playing with Buster he seems to get super energetic and doesn't want to stop. But when he does stop that's it. No matter where the ball lies. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I have a White German Shepherd puppy and not only are they very smart, but very stubborn too.. so far, she will go after the ball, come half way to me and then take off in the other direction..Of course if I said drop it, she will, but not anywhere near me.. All I can say is keep working with your dog, which btw, your dog is beautiful, my Dad used to breed beagles and actually I would have wanted a beagle and not a German Shepherd, but this is what came into our lives and now she is a part of the family..

Awwww a sweet addition isn't she? Well I won't be playing fetch with Buster for a few days. We have nasty winter weather arriving tonight. (Thur) We have a winter storm warning out. 4 to 12 inches expected between tonight and Friday night. Ugghh! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

This would be much easier! lol - I couldn't teach my dogs that trick. Good luck!
I've been able to teach my dogs to shake, sit, stay and speak but to get them to stay when I threw a ball was something that I couldn't get them to understand so if you get the right answer and it works, I'd be ever so happy to hear what it is! LOL

Buster will sit, lay, roll over, jump, and give you either one paw, or two paws if asked. He also will go to his pillow or kennel or to mommy if told to as well for treats. I am trying to teach him to speak but no luck so far. Some day it'll work I'm sure. Haven't gotten the answer yet. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We have a ball obsessed poodle. Nothing on earth will make him sit still if you throw that ball. He does return it, and if you pretend to ignore him when he brings back the ball, he'll throw it at you.

Sable - This was after a trip, she's usually more lively than this!
Sable (part Golden Retriever part Boxer) doesn't totally understand the whole fetch thing. She does wait for you to throw it, we're usually on the deck so she'll run to the railing and see where it lands. Then she'll go get it and bring it back to us, but won't let us have it. She doesn't get that she has to let it go for us to throw it for her again...

We do not have a dog, but we do have two cats. Don't laugh. One of our cats, Sass likes to play fetch. He drops his little 'mousie' right in my lap waiting for me to toss it agin. Maybe Buster will learn to stay with the ball after a while.

I had a couple cats that also played fetch. One I had loved to chase the light from a flashlight as I moved it up and down the walls and curtains. Not good for the cutains but fun to watch none the less. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We play fetch with my dog also. We throw balls, chew ropes, chew bones and some toys for him to go and get and bring back to us. He will stay until he is told to go fetch it also. He knows all of his toys by name. If we tell him to get his chew bone, he knows exactly what we mean. If we tell him to get his rope, he knows that one too, etcetera. Dogs are so smart.
