I write sonnets, particularly sonnets about cats. My book, Cat-House Sonnets, 100 poems celebrating cats, has won a Muse Medallion from the Cat Writers Association. In it are sonnets dealing with every aspect of living with a feline companion -- eating, playing, sleeping, getting underfoot, using the litterbox.
I enjoy writing sonnets because I am forced to contain my ideas in a strict format. I have no room to wander all over getting an idea across to the reader. I need the form for discipline. My sonnets are written in every day language and are easily accessible and easily understood. My style has been compared to that of Robert Frost.
I would be interested in sharing experiences with writers who would like to be published and with writers of sonnets. I have a feeling that there are very few sonnet writers around these days.

I always thought, ever since I read the first poems, that strict formats just hinder the creativity.
Well, I do believe that sonnets and all species of poetry that are fixed forms, are beautiful: well aranged in the page, good rhyming and rhythm, easy to remeber... but I ask a question...is the meaning you want to express, the message you want to convey...is it the way you want it to be? Poetry needs a message, a feeling, poetic imagery...the form is almost free...and i think this is the best way to write. Of course, it all depends on the writer's experience, when he/she chooses a form or another.
I always write in free verse, and sometimes use rhyme just to stress something out, or to emphasize a word, or a part of a figure of speech. Fixed form just alters my message...does nit allow me to put down everything I want.
~ ...in my opinion... feel free to express yours ~

I think poetry is supposed to be a succinct expressions of thoughts or feelings. I need the tight form to keep from running all over the place. It orders my thought process and is much harder to write for me. It makes me concentrate harder. If I can confine myself to 14 lines and a particular rhyme scheme and still get my feeling or point across, it is really rewarding for me. Poetry is a very personal expression. One has to do it the way that is best for his or her self.

Congratulations on the publication of your book and for winning the Muse Medallion. You must feel very proud.
I have studied the form of the sonnet from its Petarchian origins, through Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and its use by modern poets. I admire anyone who can write according to its strict format. I never could.
I know some British poets still use the form, but you are right it is not widely used. I think it can be used very effectively in every day language.

I write poetry and meditations primarily. However, I do have a manuscript I have submitted. I understand that it can take a year or more to hear back.
I have been told that my style of writing is a combination of a Mother and a Teacher. Enough facts to show the importance and straight shooting from my heart truths. I also give examples.
I began writing as an emotional release as a child. Sometimes that is still the reason I write. Sometimes things just pop into my head and won't leave me alone till I get it down on paper. This happens with my paintings too. I like form, but I also like to be able to put my express my passion for everything. Don't just know beauty exists. Look for it and share it.

I write poetry and have for some time. I have just decided to submit a few poems to a couple of poetry contest and see what happens. I think I took after my Dad he could write about anything. He never wrote poetry but he was good at writing down what he wanted to say and get across.
