APA stands for the American Psychological Association. This is a common style in the social and behavioral sciences. It's basically a way of writing notations and references that are standard in those types of fields. I know of APA style and MLA style. The MLA style is the style that most people use, while APA is a more scientific type of style.
You can probably find an APA style manual in your library.
