Do you think there will ever be a cure for obesity?
*
While many say that eating less and exercising more is the 'cure' for obesity, I disagree. It is not that simple. Exercising is good, so is good nutrition, but it is not a cure-all.
*
All the diet/exercise in the world won't do crap if the situation isn't nutrition/activity related. Drugs can cause build up of fat cells, so can a malfunction of the thyroid and other glands. Lots of glands control your 'fat thermostat'.
*
If diet/exercise were a cure-all, you would not find people who, despite doing the exact same things activity and food wise, having very different body type and masses. There is more evidence coming out every day that is indicating that obesity is caused by genetic or medical factors. There are also studies showing environmental factors (not food ingestion) that are leading to excess accumulation of body fat.
*
The obese are also being treated poorly in a manner likened to bigotry toward minorities.

While some of what you say maybe true. There is too much ignorance about nutrition. People believe that they just have to cut back in order to lose weight but it really involves a new life style. Getting more nutritional dense food instead of empty calories. Finding a new way to handle stress.

That is true.

Baked spuds can be topped by other things besides butter and sour cream though if you are creative. (Yogurt is a substitute for sour cream.)

I am allergic to wheat (I get the most horrific migraines from wheat products) and I treat them like bread. Potatoes find themselves under chili, chilies, veggies, eggs, you name it. A great way to have a baked spud is to have it under a homemade soup.

Very true. For example, a baked potato is much more nutritious than a French fry. People often wonder why because they are both derived from the same root veggie. It's the skin of the baked spud that holds all the golden nutrients.

I totaly agree with what you are saying. Treating bigger people with prejudice is just as bad as racism.

There will never be one cure for obesity because there are too many possible factors involved for the cause.
It could be genetics, illnesses, medications, emotional or psychological reasons, stress, growing up being told to eat everything on one's plate or raised with lack of physical activity, etc.
I worked for a weight loss clinic when I was younger.
This also entailed counseling on a regular basis. My boss got mean with those that did not lose weight so they mostly came and waited to talk to me. Some of their stories broke my heart, but I encouraged them to keep up the good work. Some came in for the initial consultation and had doubts but wanted to sign up anyway. I wouldn't let them. I made them really think it over because I wasn't about to set them up to fail. My boss would push them just for the sale. Know what? I have never had a weight problem but my boss did and she only cared about the money.
In the end, she lost because she had the most refunds from being such a pushy person.
Bottom line is...a person needs to get to the root of the problem before he/she can find the right solution that fits his or her needs. There is no magic pill.

Your boss sounds like a creep. I like your approach to the problem.

There is so much new information out now that there was not known just ten years ago, I bet your former boss is eating her...pushiness now!

heh...having the fact that more and more types of food are more and more synthetic (thanks to "progress"), and people do less and less excercise (thanks to "progress", too), and that "progress" is becoming more available everywhere, i think that obesity will become more frequent. There are, indeed, some diseases that makes people lose weight very hard, but these people can lose weight. It's all about willing, and giving up a lot of "tasty" foods.

That is true in many cases but not all.
*
Please do not make the mistake of generalizing. There are cases where people face 'perfect storms' where sets of factors prevent weight loss. It is rarely one problem but multiple sets of problems that cause the 'perfect storm'.

At one time, illness in general was considered a blot, Yellow fever was considered a result of your sins. Think on that.

I doubt that there will be a "cure" for it. I think ppl are moving towards healthier living and better eating habits. I have seen reports saying that "diets" don't work for taking off extra weight b/c they are a temporary fix...in order to lose it and keep it off, you have to change the way you eat.

Very true. If your eating foods that look very much like what they did in their original state, your most likely better off than if you ate processed crap.

Baked potatoes are more nutritious than potato chips for example.
