Watching for Death?

I was reading a review of the upcoming season of "Deadliest Catch" which airs on the Discovery Channel. It is about crab fishing, and how it is the most dangerous job in the world. It ticked me off because the reviewer said the only people who watch it, are people who watch to see someone die or 'almost' die. I found that quite ignorant. I love seeing the interactions between the captain and deckahands, how some family members sort their working relationships from their personal, and so on. The beauty of Alaska, and the hilarious hijinks each crew has are what keeps me coming. And if someone dies, you don't actually see it, you hear about it coming over the radio (they did show one guy going overboard, but he was saved and fine).
It led me to think about NASCAR and hockey. I don't watch either although I have been to a hockey game. I heard some people saying they come for the fights, the violence (that is all you ever see on Sportscenter about hockey, the fighting). But I have a hard time believing people watch NASCAR just to see people crash and possibly die. I find it boring, but so what? It is exciting to other people, and I don't think it has to do with seeing someone possibly die.
What do you think about this? Do you think some people love watching certain things just to see potential violence and death? Do you like any of the sports or shows I have mentioned, and if so, why is it that you watch?

Nope....but there are tons of people out there that do like it...and many that have police scanners in their houses so they can ambulance chase. I don't like bloody sports....And if I came on an accident I would be one of those people that they had to pick up on the side of the road as I am not good with violence!

Absolutely some people love gory stuff, they watched for the violence, they find violence exciting. There are people out there like that pam, as they say it takes all kinds to make a world.

Hi Spookybutt,
I imagine that the marketing people have researched viewer motivation and so are pandering to what they believe will attract an audience for these programs.
That is to say, it's likely that there is a proportion of the population that has a sado-voyeuristic streak, and is thereby entertained by the misfortunes of others.
All sorts of psychological models might be proposed for that - like (for example) the individual is subliminally relieved that he / she is not the subject of the suffering - but it is what it is. I'd personally be inclined to regard people with such an attitude as children born of unwed parents, and chances are that assessment would be substantiated by other behavioral evidence.
There's a show in Australia called "Funniest Home Videos" and you've probably got similar shows in your part of the globe. I find that the videos which are shown on that show mostly just aren't funny, although the studio audience apparently thinks they are. Things like people falling off skateboards and landing on their face on the road, and other stuff like that. How is that funny?
IMO the ones that ARE funny are the videos of pets getting up to mischief or just doing the silly things that pets tend to do. Sometimes they'll have a cat and a dog play-fighting with each other, as small dogs and cats in the same household often do, and I'm amazed every time at the huge imbalance between the two animals - no wonder dogs hunt in packs and cats are solitary animals! The poor dog never has a hope in Hell, he's out-gunned, out-numbered and out-maneuvered at every turn. Sort of like a snail competing with an octopus.
BUT the animal videos don't generally involve someone getting hurt like most of the other stupid videos. And it's funny to watch otherwise intelligent creatures getting up to the silliest antics. They even had one remarkable case of a dog talking - or attempting to articulate itself, to the extent that a dog can, in a manner which clearly showed that he knew and understood what he was trying to say. they really are much, much smarter than a lot of people like to assume.
I was told a story just yesterday about a pair of rats which got up to all sorts of coordinated teamwork to steal eggs from a poultry shed - doing stuff that Tom Cruise would have trouble matching in Mission Impossible. And this was in real life, unrehearsed and uncontrolled on a farm, unlike Tom in the mega-million-dollar film studios.
Animals are smart - yet they have the minds of children - and that's part of what makes some of their shenanigans so funny to watch.
People might watch so-called "danger" movies out of morbid curiosity, but I personally consciously resist the urge to do so. There are much more important and constructive ways to use one's time, I'd expect.

America's Funniest Homw Videos just celebrated like their 20th anniversary here or something, and you bring up a good point about it. A LOT of the videos over the years are of people getting hurt, falling off a roof, getting hit in the eye on accident, and I never laugh at those. How is that funny? How is it entertaining? My favorite are the animals like you mentioned. Or of little kids saying really cute things. Now thosethings are funny.

I think they are just trying to get the excitemnt and more viewers. I do watch this so and love it for the same reasons you listed and I love to see who wins.

I watched that show a few times and I didn't see any violence there at all. Violence towards who and what exactly?
Maybe there is animal abuse involved after the crabs are delivered, but at the dock I didn't see it at all. Plus the crews are working together and there is work pressure creating tension between them, but that happens in any work place I'm sure. I don't watch much of sports I'm not a big fan of them, but if I have time I like watching Olympic games.
