Why is my cat jumping to high places?

This cat looks like our cat! - Our cat is a beautiful black kitty like this one.

My cat has started to jump on bookshelves, the kitchen counters, and the washing machine. Now she also gets on top of the refrigerator, by jumping on the kithchen counter, and then jumping to the refrigerator. Why does she do this? Please help. I am afraid she will get hurt. We have a George Forman grill on the kitchen counter, and I am afraid she will jump while it is on, and get burned.

normal cats always jumps here and there. i think your cat's need a natural environment(outside home)take her out let her climbs the a tree. i have 3 cats but they never jumps at home but everyday all cats play outsite and practice for long jump.

I think cats just like to get up on things. My cats all jump on everything, including in the barn, where they could easily fall a long ways, and it makes me really nervous but they seem to get down just fine. I think the cat will know if the George Forman grill is on, cause hopefully it will be able to smell that it is hot. And wouldn't you be standing near by anyway to kind of shoo it away from the grill?? It makes me very nervous too when the cats jump up on things that are high up, but they do love to do it and I don't think you can stop them. Good luck to you and hopefully your cat doesn't fall, but I don't think it will.

She tried to jump on the bookshelf yesterday, but there was a box on top of it, and she didn't make it on top of the box. Luckily, she wasn't hurt.

Who knows why cats do this, they are a strange breed. My cat jumps on the fridge too. I also have their cat food on the counter next to the stove and I am afraid they are going to jump up there one day while the stove is going and get burnt. I love cats, they are so funny.

I think that that is the way some cats are and there's not much you can do about it---other than removing items that you don't want her walking on or sniffing, such as food, etc. And pay special attention to your furnace, if your cat runs down to the cellar. Quite a few years ago, my cat explored the cellar when I was out, and somehow slipped or fell on the wiry thingy on the outside of the furnace. Her leg was caught and the poor cat required police assistance to remove her, followed by a trip to the vet's office. Her leg never improved and the vet wanted to amputate it. She's the same cat who used to jump on the kitchen table and stove counter. Her movements caused the stove's pilot light to go out a few times. Nothing that I did or said changed her habit. And even after she hurt her leg, that hyper cat still ran around the house! Some cats just can't be changed. That's how they are.

Cats naturally like high spaces. It's safer for them for one thing; they can see everywhere. One of my cats jumped on the woodstove when it was on. So your cat may not know when the grill is hot. You should supervise the grill. The woodstove cat had to sit will aloe wet paper towels wrapped around each foot for 3 hours. He was fine and never got on there again. I don't think you'll be able to stop your cat from seeking high places. And please don't let your cat go outside. There are dangers out there -- evil people, animal predators, illnesses, injuries, fights with other animals, kidnapping, being hit by a car. The safest place for a cat is in your house with you and your family.
