Hey busta1
Building your own computer isn't A LOT cheaper in my opinion.
It just depends what sort of computer you want to build though really.

What do you mean by a basic computer? Do you mean like... low specs and stuff? If so, yeh, you can easily build one for $299 or so.

To be honest, that isn't always true. If you are building a quality machine, or a gaming computer, it is a lot cheaper. If you are building a crappy budget PC, than the $250 store bought crap is cheaper. Now although that is true, you get what you pay for. Anyone who knows computers knows that people who buy some cheap eMachines computer will be buying a new comp in a year or two when the piece of garbage implodes.
Either way, I build my own comps because I will only use quality parts and I don't like the way that computer companies cut corners and use cheap parts, including proprietary motherboards, power supplies, and cases. That way if the PSU or motherboard goes bad, you have to buy an overpriced replacement from them.
The parts I use rarely have problems, but if they do, I know it'll be easy to RMA the parts and put a replacement in there easily. Not to mention the fact that branded PCs have only a 1 year warranty. The parts I used often have 3 year and 5 year warranties. All the RAM I buy comes with lifetime warranties.

Building your own computer isn't too hard, but it's good to have an experienced person helping you the first time. It looks like you're in the US so the best place to get computer parts is www.newegg.com Tigerdirect.com isn't bad from what I've heard, but Newegg has always been my favorite. You will need the following:
Case
Power Supply (sometimes included with the case)
Motherboard
RAM
Processor
Hard drive
DVD drive
Video card (if you plan on gaming)
and of course monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers
If you won't do any gaming you can get a motherboard with integrated graphics instead of a video card. The important thing to do is make sure all your parts are compatible. If you decide to build your own computer you can PM me and I'll give you advice on what parts to get. You should have a budget in mind for what you want to spend. A good home built computer will run you around $500 or $600 for a basic system. Gaming machines will cost a bit more depending on what you want.

The main attraction of building your own computer is not the price, but as you have said you can select the components that you prefer. it is difficult to buy a ready made system that uses the components that you want, so a personally designed system is the logical approach.

If you want build your pc, hardware depend by types of use that you want to do... for example for graphig applications you must have a big RAM and a very good graphic board... if you are looking for a cheaper pc look at this:

You are right on the dot Busta1. Building a computer yourself actually does saves you money. If you are on a tight budget you can channel it right where you needed it, say spend more on memory or increase hard disk capacity or beef up your graphics. You could easily suit it to your needs.

Yes,it's really very cheap to build it by youself.I thin I can build one just with 2000RMB.Yes,it's not a very good one but it's enough for me to use.Because you can choice the good parts if you think it's need and you can choice the cheap one if you think there is no too many use for you.So if we want to have a computer I think we'd better build it by ourselves. It's not only cheap but also we will satisfilled with it.
