I was thinking lately that I really would like to have my teeth whitened at the dentist. But I am worried that my teeth will become sensitive if I have done that and when I drink hot or cold drinks it will be irritating. Have you had your teeth whitened before? What did you use. or did you get it done at a dentist? Are you happy with the results?

I have never had a dentist whiten my teeth. I have however used the Crest Whitening Strips. They work really well! They did make my teeth sensitive for awhile and I took some tylenol for it. My dad tried them and his teeth hurt too. He didn't like that part and gave the rest of his to me. I don't know why but now when I use them my teeth don't hurt anymore. They whiten really well though!

Awesome, those whitening strips sound good, glad to hear that you did not experience sensitive teeth for long. Sounds like the results were worth it.

No, I have never had my teeth whitened, and I have never really thought about it to be honest. I know that you can buy kits from the chemist to do them yourself at home, although I have never tried one and so I would not know how good it was. I am lucky in that I have fairly good white teeth, but I guess thinking about it, it would be nice to have a Hollywood smile!!

Hi, I don't smoke or drink coffee either. I just like the pearly white teeth. Yeah I agree going to the dentist, probably won't make my teeth as sensitive.

I talked to my dentist and hygenist about whitening last time i went for check up. Actually I started asking about whether an electric toothbrush was better than a manual one. They both said, yes and no. The part that "intrigues" people to think that an electric is better is that they don't have to do anything. Just just stand there and it does the brushing, while with a regular brush, they have to do the work to make it brush. Because of this, the eletric will do better cause most won't stand and brush for minimm 2 minutes., but stand there and do nothing, they are more proned to do that. Plus, for the back of the mouth/teeth, the electric are smaller heads so they are easier to be back there and brush, while a regular brush, you have to do the pushing back there and the heads are larger and it is harder to brush back and forth that far back, while an electric, just sits there and does the brushing. I use the electric at night and brush in AM to get best of both brushes ability! Then I asked about the whitening rinses. She said, "look at it this way, it takes 20 minutes and several visits to the dentist to get a good whitening result. How much do you think a 2 minute rinse is going to do?" I asked her if it effects the enamel on teeth cause I have sensitivity due to loosing enamel over the years and she said, y eah it does effect it as it is "bleaching" away what is on the enamel so kind of like in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kind of hard to take off the problem that is attached to the surface without touching the surface. But this is also why they do it in a few visits if you might have that problem or so they can address or watch for that problem to reveal itself. That is what my dentist and hygenist said.

You're welcome. I love this dentist cause he literally tells you what is going on so you can understand. Takes alot of time to talk WITH you, not at you or around you, but tell you how to take better care of your teeth. I think "why are you telling me this detailed stuff? It will allow me to better take care of my teeth, which means I wont' be back to you very often"... but I don't complain or even ask! Just absorbe the info and use it to keep my teeth in good shape. He uses normal every day things as examples instead of the medical/dental versions that we can't understand as we dont' even know the meaning of the words! He compares things to what a common person would know. Love this dentist!!!! But the hygenist did mention no more than 2 treatments a week for whitening. I didn't bother any more as my insurance won't cover it and I can't afford it otherwise, so I just moved on from there to what I could use to help me.

Wow that is expensive, I have not looked into cost yet, I knew it would be expensive but not that much. I will have to see how much it cost here in Australia. Maybe I will have to get some whitening strips if too expensive. I need fillings too, lol, I probably should be worried about that first I guess, I hate drills though.

Hi littleowl, thanks for your concerns. I will get my fillings done, one at a time soon. Just hard to at the moment while not working. Dentists are so expensive, plus I need to find a good one, I worry about finding a dodgy dentist, lol.

I have used the strips and I was happy with the initial results but it seemed to not last. And, I did have sensitivity issues and stopped using them. I still have issues in the back- but the sensitivity from those strips was in the front teeth. It went away as soon as I stopped using them. Even if I use whitening toothpaste, it will worsen in the back so I stay away from it. Not worth it to me!

I have whitened my teeth before but I have done it with at home supplies that I bought from the store. I used "crest white strips" and for me they worked pretty well. They are painless, you just put the strip on your teeth and wait the recomended time. To be honest I did have a little sensitivity after they I did them, but that went away after a day. People did comment on how white my teeth looked, so I take that as a good result.

I am also thinking about getting it whitened too. But I heard that it costs a lot so i guess i'll have to wait for a while. But I think that if you don't whiten them that much then you should be okay. But I really want to whiten them so they could look all white and pearly.

i had it done at my dentist office and they used a ultraviolet light and they are so white they almost glow in the dark ,no pain involved ,took about 1 hour of shinning the uv blue light on my teeth and it worked great ,expensive but worth it .

I have done both the at home stuff and the one with the doctor. It is whiter with the doctor but, it is more expensive and not comfortable. If you get Crest White Strips or something like that from the grocery store, it will be cheaper and you should be happy with the results. Less sensitivity, less money, a nice job. The only thing is that it takes a little more time because it is like 1 or 2 weeks as opposed to 1 or 2 visits with the dentist. But, one thing I can tell you for sure, none of it is permanent. If you drink anything but water or eat anything with color in it, your teeth will always stain again and you will have to repeat the process over again. So, I prefer the less expensive route and feel better if I need to freshen up again down the line as I didn't spend $500 to do it a year ago. I hope I was helpful!

I am happy that you are content with your pale yellow coloured teeth, lol. I am not too worried about the chemicals as I have had that much chemicals in my hair it won't make much difference if I have chemicals on my teeth, lol.

I have no idea about the whitening process...but i have a friend who has had her teeth veneered...all of ther front ones....and although yes they look beautifully white...they look very artificial...almost like false teeth!!! She is an extremely attractive young woman...so they still look lovely on her....but im wondering how she feels when she eats..ive never dared ask her....I have one front tooth veneered..and you are afraid to bite on it too much...as it feels as though it will snap off.....o im just wondering how she feels with all of her front teeth done in this way
