Essential travel items?

I always feel like I've overpacked when I travel. I currently have three bags with me for travel, while my traveling associate only has two. So is it just because I'm female that I overpack, or do any of the guys out there take a lot with them when they travel too?
What items do you absolutely have to have with you when you travel? For me, aside from most of the typical stuff, I always have to make sure I have plenty of ibuprofen, because I inevitably have a headache by the end of the trip. :(

My fiance is big on packing light--his dad was in the Navy and taught him how to do it. Even when he packs my bags for me, though, I still want to take more stuff, just in case. :)

how long are you going for with 3 bags? I generally just take a backpack (though sometimes its a fairly big one). I went for a year with just a backpack, though it was a 70 litre one lol.

Usually, I travel overpacked. I bring necessary clothes though but I wanted to bring some extra stuff like small pillow, some hygiene stuff which I'm carrying much heavier than my clothes, plus some extra shoe wear, and others. I just can't go away without them. What if I need them on my travel, hehehe..

I carry a back pack, a day pack and my hand bag on a trip. I take some clothes, washing liquid for these and an elastic travel style washing line that avoids the need for clothes pegs. My camera and my alarm clock are essential items. I take a bag with shampoo, conditioner, deodrant, contact lenses, a tiny mirror, comb, toothpaste and toothbrush in. I often take a few snacks like rice cakes, dried fruit and nuts to eat. I sometimes take my snorkeling mask and a towel for the days I spend on tropical beaches. It is essential when I fly that I take ear planes, small plastic screw like things that go in my ears. This summer I am flying with my baby son to Latvia and we only have 15kg baggage allowance between us. Good luck with your packing.

hi scarywhitegirl,
my sister has the same situation as you. she tends to overpack, and sometimes even she packed enough she would still borrow some of my clothes. lol.. but for me, i would bring my hygine kit, first aid kit, 2-3 pairs of shoes [rubber shoes/walking shoes, and a night out shoes], 1 slipper, and enough clothes for the # of days we would stay, clothes that would coordinate with my shoes for the morning and that would be mixed and matched and probably 2 or 3 dresses that would come in handy for a night out.
