How do you explain to someone how to be an adult?

My husband made the comment the other day that he "felt like he missed the day in school where they taught everyone how to behave like an adult". He didn't mean how to act mature or not to be wild like a teenager, he meant simple things like: how to write a resume, what kind of goofing off is okay in the office and what isn't, or how to apply to college (what paper work is needed). Is there a way to explain that? I think some of it - to me - is common sense. But since he has the whole genius thing going on sometimes commone sense isn't his strong point. I know some things I learned by trial and error, other things I was taught.

Oh gosh sedel, I think for most of us it is through experience and the experience of those we admire. We just do not go from High school into the adult world knowing what we are suppose to do. Even book learning is sometimes not helpful.... but man I giggled when you said that common sense is not always one of his strong suits.... LMAO I am not sure men understand the concept of common sense. It is always the great big picture they are looking at and not the tiny details of that picture that makes it whole. My kid was just reading over my shoulder and said just thump him on the nose like you do me mom :))) L:MAO

LOL thanks for the luagh. I don't get it...Maybe he is stoo spoiled. I dunno. I just feel like simple things like fillign out a college app is not hard. I was taught how to do that in HS. Granted, he wasn't forced to learn since he was going into the military (something else that didn't pan out)...but heck at 27, you would think that you can figure it out...especially if you can program complex video game scripts.

I'm not really sure. My daughter is a perfect example. of this. she will be 17 years old and alot of times, wants us to treat her like and adult, but alot of times she acts so childish. I'm not sure whether to give her a bottle or take her to the bra, per say, anymore, LOL. Just kidding. I try to teach her the adult ways of life because she is getting to that age now.

We cannot teach someone to be an adult. It is a process whereby a person undergoes and mature along the way. I agree with you that it's more on common sense. But the best teacher is learning from the experience of others. Have a wonderful day!

to become an adult means being more responsible than what you do, making good and firm decisions. also, being an adult means being a role model to young ones.
