We had some severe storms with lots of lightning here in Minneapolis Minnesota area Monday night. Seldom do you hear about a vehicle being struck by lightning though. The rubber tires are supposed to act to protect you from being struck most times. Not at out Airport anyhow. "The three construction workers, whose names were not immediately available, were hurt at 10:20 p.m. when lightning struck the vehicle they were in on a taxiway..." they were alert and not hurt seriously luckily. Have you ever known anyone to be struck or nearly struck by lightning? I had a friensd in A.A. that died recently while fishing during a storm get struck. A shame he did not know bettert than holding a graphite pole into the air as a severe storm was in the area. http://www.startribune.com/local/west/17994059.html HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

lightening - can, will, and has killed
I don't know of anybody per sa but I do have a story that my grandmother told me. When she was a young gal, she was working at a pizza place which was near a military base. Three guys were working on a flag pole and had come in for lunch. They didn't have enough money to pay their bill and felt terrible so my grandmother told them not to worry about it to pay it the next time they come in. Back then, people were more trust worthy. The guys went back to work on the flag pole and a storm was approaching and a lightening struck the pole and killed all three men. My grandmother was so shook up over it and never forgot the incident. I say, I guess not! Wow.

I might have been almost struck by lightning, and I was pretty scared when it happened. It was a long time ago, but I still think about it whenever we have a lot of lightning storms. My husband and I were lounging around drinking coffee and reading the Sunday paper in bed when we heard something that sounded like a zap, and simultaneously saw a flash coming from the window, and going over our bed through the open doorway out into the hall, where it seemed to hit the hall light fixture. The light bulb in the fixture blew out, though the glass in the fixture was unbroken. It was so weird, and I got up and went downstairs and away from windows for a while. My husband thought it might have been some kind of lightning, and I was glad that neither of us was standing up at the time, because it would have hit us.

Your friend received a bolt from the blue with disterous consequencies. He may not have known that is rod would be an atraction to the lightning and carried on regardless not knowing what fate awaited him. shame!

Too many times thruout my life have I had such close calls with lightning but, thankfully, never actually been struck by it.

I don't know anyone who had ever been struck by lightening. I know that it is more common than you would think though. I am glad that the construction workers were not killed. It is too bad about your friend.

I never heard that before! Maybe we all need biGGer tires! (Tho if they were in a service truck..) That's too bad about your friend when fishin'. I've never heard of that either.. but do know some dudes that are quite the motivated fishermen. I hope they never do that! Poor guy!

One of my uncles got struck by lightening when a thunderstorm came up at a family picnic. He ran under a bridge where a stream was flowing to get away from the rain. He wasn't seriously hurt, though.

I don't know anyone struck by lightening but I was sitting in the living once and I had a glass coffee table with a steel frame and the lightening came right in the window and struck the steal on the name, I heard sizzling sound, saw a spark and then it was gone. It was so fast.

I have not personally had any friend being hit by lightening. But of course we hear of it happening every now & then. Usually it is on a sports field or near a tree. I have never heard of someone being hit by lightening whilst in a car. This must be very rare. The one incident I do remember was when I was about 9 years old. I was sitting on the front verandah with a friend in the midst of an electrical storm. We were under cover. All of a sudden I heard an almighty bang, & something made me looked to the left at the same time. There was a fork lightening hitting the ground, in my neighbours yard about 5 metres from where we were sitting. I will never forget it.

That's just too scary for my tastes! I've had lightning strike about an inch from my nose, when I was in 2nd grade, and it scared the bejeebers out of me. I don't personally know anyone who's been struck. But my dad had a friend that would get hit by lightning all the time THROUGH the window of his big rig. It caused a heart attack one of the times.

Wow, that is scary. I have been nearby when a tree got struck by lightning...the hair on my arms stood up from the charge. My guess is that the tires did ground the car and most of the charge went into the ground, but if they had contact with metal in the car, they did get a shock. I have heard of fisherman getting hit by lightning and also children out there on fields playing baseball - got to love those aluminum bats. I guess this is as good a time to warn people, if you can see a storm or hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. So take shelter.

Yikes! I think I would have went in and forgot about the fishing! I have never met anyone that has been or even nearly close to being hit. I have however seen some gentlemen out on the golf course long after they should have been in.....Do you remember when the had the big golf tournament in the cities? My brother and sister in law and my parent went to that...wasn't there some poeple killed because they were standing under a tree?

Oh my goodness, that is awful..I remember as a kid my Dad would talk about this neighbor who day or night would go outside to her car during a lightening storm..If only she would know that it is not 100% safe.. I have not known anyone hit by lightening, but we have had some close calls here at home..Since we live on a lake, the lightening is very attracted to our home..We had a tree in the front yard hit and the sound was very scary..(and this is coming from someone who loves thunderstorms) With some quick thinking, we put some tree tar on it and saved it, though the first 2 years it didn't look good..
