We just moved everything around in our home and now it seems like we need 4 or 5 new trash cans to keep things neat and tidy. For now we are hanging plastic bags on door knobs and taking them to the outside can when they are full or if company is comming over. I would love to get cans that dont look so tacky. I was hoping that some one had an idea for a way to make garbage cans fron household items or trash. Does anyone have a clever idea to make a few small trash cans?

I've used those popcorn tins that people give around Christmas time, or plastic ice cream buckets. For small areas like a bathroom, cut the top off a plastic milk jug and use it. You can decoupage, paint or glue cloth over it. Anything that's any kind of container can be used.

We just got rid of our popcorn tin too. I thought the snowman was a bit out of season. I didnt think about changing the look of it. That would have been a great size to keep under the computer desk too. Shoot, I guess I will know better for next year. Thanks.

One way would be by taking regular paper grocery bags and decopage-ing them with whatever theme would like. You can spray them inside and out with 'clear coat' or heavy glue to keep them somewhat water proof...it willl also make them stiffer. All those old gift bags that accumulate could be treated in the same manner. The good thing about using bags like that is that if you do get a bad mess in them it's no big deal to just throw the whole thing away. Even small shipping boxes would work the same way.

I got a paper bag today at the store. It is earth day so they are not giving out paper today. Looks like that worked well for me. Thanks.

When I was in high school, I used a taller box to make a recycling bin for my room; it would work just fine for a trashcan too. You can dress up the outside with wrapping paper or collage--even theme the decorations to the room they're going to be used in. I wouldn't recommend a cardboard box for a bathroom trashcan (the humidity wouldn't be good for it) but it should work for other rooms! :)
