Everyone here probably remembers when "Chill out dude" was a very common phrase. But do any of you know where the phrase originated? Were you aware there is a link between Chill Out and the cannabis culture? Check out my blog entry "Chill Out Dude" at http://420-now.blogspot.com/2008/04/chill-out-dude.html for more details on the link. I think its very interesting, but then I am interested in how phrases came into popular vernacular.

Chill out did become part of popular vernacular in the 90's for North American culture, however it goes back much further then that, check out the link. It was brought to the Americas by Rastafarians who were referring to a Chillum pipe which they adapted from Hindu culture.

Hi myrrdin, I for some reason have not thought about it. Though it does make sense. I have been saying it for so long it's like second nature. I mean come on I'm fory something and I still say dude frequently as well as chill out. It's just who I am. what can I say??...Mamablaze!!

That is definitely an interesting historical fact. I'm still laughing from your closing in that blog entry. Good one!!!
As for "chilling out"... I don't need to. But I could feel more relaxed if I were to have a brownie (but not two!... that'd be WAY TOO relaxed for me! lmao!).

Yes I stumbled upon it last night reading a book about the history of cannabis, I found it quite interesting and expanded some of the research in order to write the post
Thanks for the compliment on the post, I had fun writing it really, especially the closing

Last weekend when I took the bus up to Masonville with the boys to get the washer, I told them all to "Chill out!". I couldn't help but laugh at myself, realizing that I've said that to them a LOT over the years. Now that I know the origin of the term, what kind of a mother am I? Really now? Encouraging such illegal activities amongst MINORS at that! EEK!!!
