I have tons of this great ground cover growing in my lily bed and around one of my apple trees. It is called Snow On The Mountain. The leaves are outlined with white. The leaves will turn to a darker green as the summer gets warmer. These grow like weeds and spread as easily. My old neighbor gave me a few plants for my Lily bed out front 4 years ago. My Lily bed is about 25 feet long and 2 feet deep. Now the Snow on the Mountain is planted around the outer edge but in 4 years it now covers nearly the whole bed area. I take cuttings and plant them in other areas. They spread and grow so quickly I actually run my lawnmower over them to trim them down. Within a few days they are back strong as ever. They are very beautiful and hardy as well. Do you have any Snow On The Mountain in your yard etc? Do you have any type of ground cover at all?

One is a Honey Crips and the other is a Halared. They fruited nicely last year. This is the third year I've had them and got over 100 apples last year. I expect more this year. I do all my yard work but the trees are so small I have yet to prune them. That has to be done late fall or early winter so as not to damage the trees.

The sole purpose of prining is to keep the tree(s) at a shape that the owner wants. The fruits all depend on the blooms not the pruning technique. Pruning can cause the tree to have fewer blooms easily though. I'll have to ask at Bacjmans Nursery this wekend to find out for sure.

the snow is finally gone in my back yard and I can actually see the grass underneath. It has been a long hard winter in Canada. The east is nice but I hear in the west they are still having snow storms.

Our Snow on the Mountain came back this year and tripled in size! I have to thin it out and move some of it to an area that I don't mind it taking over. It is a lovely ground cover. I enjoy the color of the leaves.

I have never heard of Snow on the Mountain. It's very pretty.
I have hostas and daylillies coming up from last year. I haven't planted any more flowers this year. I'm not very good at growing stuff. I have planted some cherry tomatoes and I'm going to plant some peppers. I am using containers cause the soil is not very good here.

I've also got some Hostas and dayliilies. Those aren't strting to bloom yet. A couple weeks or more at least till they do. We are due for a streak of 4 days here where the temps at night will be near freezing so things will die off a bit the renew themselves. I may have to toss some straw on the lilies and others to protect them this weekend.

I just had to come see your snow on the mountain. I had this all along the side of my last house. It was such a nice green with that white edge all season long and I loved the color. Does yours get some kind of blossom for a short time? Some folks think of this as an invasive weed, I looked at it as a nice ground cover and I didn't have to weed.

It gets annoying as it spreads so easily
but it is beautiful looking none the less.

I don't but wish I did.. I will have to try and find some, I have a sloping area in front of my house and it is dangerous to try and mow there because it is right on the street.. I do have a few creeping Phlox there but would take a fortune to cover all of this area.. I am going to check these out and see if I can find osme of them for this particular area.. I might never need to take my life in my hands again by mowing out front..

These wopuld be great on the sloping area you speak of. I have Phloxx also but I have the ones that grow about 2 feet tall. Not ground cover so to speak but they can be seperated to make it a ground cover. You'll see photos of them as they get bigger. they are just poking oput through the ground now.

My middle name is ground cover! Being basically lazy, my idea of weed control is ground cover! Mostly I use violets. I had just a few.. but then one day I was walking and looked over to where an old abandoned barn was next door, and there were tons of violets, so the next full moon I went over and dug some up and transplanted them (yes I was quite surreptitious, even wore dark clothing and felt like it was quite the outlaw midnight adventure - I did plug up any small holes I made however) I still transplant more which have grown from them.. I love the so pretty little purple flowers anyway.. At this same time I also saw some lily of the valley so grabbed some of those also.. they were so going to waste! And got some of these started in our acre lot. And now as they multiply each year, I transplant and spread those out. I do the same with hostas, which were here when we bought our house, but I've bought other varieties.. and I transplant these around too. Being in charge of all mowing, part of the goal is - less mowing! Plus it all looks so smuch prettier! I've even used weeds for ground cover.. around the base of trees, and in some other places.. I think the one I use most is called creeping charlie, but I'm not sure.. but it looks much neater than say, crab grass!
- How does snow on the mountain respond to drought? I have a rock wall/border which I've planted violets on but the rockiness is a bit dry for them.. unless I get out there and water them lots. I would so love to not have the huge chore of weeding atop that wall every year..

Since I cannot see your picture yet, since I am responding from e-mail, I will have to tell you later. I do not have any, but, if it is what I call snow on the mountain, I would love to have some. I see it in the wild a lot. So I am going to post this so I can get to the e-mail.

I need a type of ground cover like that. Very hardy that can be cut/walked on/weedfree and keeps springing back up. My yard has some bare spots that won't grow grass for some odd reason other than shade. Been trying to find ground cover to plant in those areas and make instant 'natural' flowerbeds thruout my yard that comes back every spring. I have a few groundcovers that have red leaves growing in almost full shade under one tree. I posted a pic on here under one of your other discussions but don't have it on my puter anymore.

I have to pick this stuff out of my grass it spreads so quickly and easily. Check out a nursery near you for it. I am sure you'll find it out there. We have pansies that pop up ever so often as well.

It handles everything well. Mine is in shade and sunny spots and we get heat and humidity here.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! That must look so beautiful! We do have Bermuda grass as ground covering in some parts of our garden. They are so easy to plant too and spread out fast too. They just like being watered two times a day. Just my thoughts dear friend. Take care and have a nice day!
