I have had a couple of those cute fish. The males make bubble nest so when they mate the females can lay their eggs there. The bigger the bubble nest the better the male is i suppose!

I would totally get turned on by a big bubble nest! I can see why the female fish dig it! It would make sense that the males that do blow the nest have seen a female. We had the male and female right by each other in seperate tanks so thats probably why the male was getting his nest on! HA HA! Good luck with the fish, they certianly are beautiful!

I love bettas and wouldn't mind having a few set around my house in each room. They are so beautiful and their jeweled tones calming to watch. But since I heat with kerosene in the winter and it tends to get to cold for them I don't get them because it would make them suffer..Here is some onformation I found it pretty much matches what others have reported. I think maybe also the age of a fish matters in it blowing bubbles. Maybe the older ones tend not to blow bubbles as often as the younger ones. Here is that info..I found it on wikipedia and you should check that out.Betta males build bubble nests of various sizes and thicknesses at the surface of the water. During and after spawning, the male uses his mouth to retrieve sinking eggs and deposit them in the bubble nest. After approximately two days the eggs hatch, and after three more they become free-swimming fry; at this point the male is generally removed from the breeding tank to prevent cannibalism and stress to the young. Betta fry are fed infusoria for the first several days, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp or similarly sized food.. www.wikipedia.com/bettas I do occasionally get a few gold fish because I like them as well and they are cheap and if something hasppens to them not alot of money is wasted.

Something to add: all male bettas blow nests when they are ready to mate. Not eh females. The only time it is actually safe for a male & female to be in the same tank is when the bubble nests are around. Other wise he may feel threatened by her.

The male makes a bubble nest when he is ready to breed. Be sure and have a place for the female to hide, as he maybe aggressive towards the female. Remove the female after she has the eggs and he has fertilized. He takes care of the eggs.

bettas use bubbles as a nest. i have one now, but he's never tried to make a nest. a couple i had in the past did. ive never owned any females for them to try and impress though. however if i remember correctly. the one i have now was in one of those little cups (poor guys i hate those little cups they have to sit in) on the pet store display with only cups containing other males. the 2 i bought that DID blow bubbles were from a different store that had bettas in those cups on the shelf but a quarter of the cups were females. so my theory would be...your male betta has actually seen a female somewhere sometime before. the others did not. now im not saying thats the definitive reason of course..im not a fish expert or anything lol, but its just something i noticed with my own fish.

yes some make bubbles, ussualy they are males, so when they meet a female they can put eggs.
