Recently I started a discussion on a bizarre news article where ppl in the Congo that actually believed sorcery was at fault for their…um…problem. It amazed me that in this day and age that ppl still believe in sorcery, curses, the evil eye, voodoo dolls, ect. I’ve read that Louisiana is very deep in the voodoo/hoodoo/black magic type things but I still find it hard to believe that they really believe in this stuff. I’m not trying to make fun of anyone or ridicule anyone…I suppose in some way it’s similar to learning religion as you grow up. If your raised around this stuff you tend to believe in it. I’ve never actually witnessed any of it first hand…hopefully I won’t end up cursed for posting this LOL There was a movie a while back called Skeleton Key that showed a lot of hoodoo type stuff in it…kind of like voodoo…and the one line that sticks out the most in my mind is “If you don’t believe in it, it can’t hurt you”. BTW, awesome movie. Do you believe in these types of things? What would it take to make you a believer? If you walked in on one of the rituals, would you believe it then? What if your children or a family member believed in it? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I think its as simple as if you do not believe in it it will not hurt you. and voodoo plays on the superstitious who fully believe in it and their minds work that way too. I mean no disrespect to anyone and their religion but for me I do not believe in it and thusit cannot screw up my mind at all. it would take an awful lot for meto believe in voodoo and if a family member believed wellthats his hard luck as I am not going into that religion at all. as for rituals they are just that and to the non believers they mean nothing.

I don't believe in them. I was raised to think of these practices as "The Black Arts" and it was dangerous to meddle in them so I stay far, far away from anything of that nature.

Well i was born in Louisana, and most of my family also live there, currently i am in Texas but i know alot about Louisana...What you are talking about is deep in the swamp countries of Louisana, and it is true that Voodoo and palm reading and fortune tellers are big in these places...Believe it or not a lot of weird stuff goes on back in those woods..In order to actually believe these things ,you must also believe in good and evil, and spirits good and bad...You must also believe in the devil and God....This is not a religion though..They cast spells and tell fortunes and this is something that has been going on for centuries, and even in the Bible days...This witch craft in these area's are mostly people that are some good ,some bad but witchcraft itsself is known as evil doings....There is evil and these witches that are bad also have a lot to do with evil spirits and if you believe in evil you will believe..There are the good and the bad....Myself i do not go by these rules and i do not hang around and never have with these sourcers,it is not true that they cannot touch you, they can, trust me,but it is of the devil, and if you are not into this and you are a christian they cannot over power you...They can read into your future and they can tell you things ,however these traits do not come from God but from the evil one....There is "true Black Magic, there are true witches, some claim to be good witches and some are bad,but in reality they all come from the same spirit, and that spirit is not a good spirit....The devil or satan does have power ans he will use these people to demostrate that power.....

I am sorry that i offended you..I was not talking about you..I was only relatinmg to the sourcers in the swamps of Louisiana, the ones who cast spells ,and harm people or try to harm people through witchcraft...They take pictures of a person and put in in a jar pee in it and bury it into the ground....I do not know if it works but many people have gotten sick and thats the ones i am talking about...Maybe there are different types of witches,i am not sure but i only know the ones in Louisana....They cast spells on people to make them sick and to hurt people..I am sure there must be different types of witches....I do not know, but you do not do these thogs then you are not the type i am speaking of......Maybe i am calling them by the wrong name, i am not sure...

So you don't believe in the spiritual realm? I do, though I haven't had much exposure and didn't grow up with it, my Bible is full of it and if it says it is real, then I believe it..In third world countries, this is much more real than here in America or any country that is up to date with the times..That is because we look at technology and make excuses for what happens and since we are so far from G♥d, (I include myself here, not pointing fingers at anyone) we don't see the spiritual part of life..

What did Moses do if not curse Pharoh and the people of Egypt? What do Christian ministers do every Sunday from their pulpits if not curse sinners with with the fires of Hell? Voodoo is simply another religion, one that is based on West African Vodun. Brought over with the slave trade. Practiced in Haiti as Vodou and in Louisiana as Voodoo. Of course it has been intersected with Christianity, primarily Catholicism and thus has adopted some of its forms and Saints. Voodoo, Vodou, and Vodun are not magic they are religons. There is no such thing as Hoodoo. This is simply a ryhmne convention used in songs. Black Magic is something that is really just found in fantasy and some arcane books written by twisted minds in search of power. There is truly no such thing. Curses and the power to curse another requires the belief of both parties. But the truth is that karma is real. Rituals are used to focus the mind and the heart. All religious adherents use ritual. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddist, Spiritualists, Witches; all use rituals to obtain focus and peace for their spirit and focus for their minds. What else is prayer if not ritual? Many organized religions use ritual to form "like" behavior. Anyone who "believes" in religion believes in curses they simply don't recognize their belief as such.

AMEN I am Wiccan and got looked down on by alot of people in the begining and then I realized that not everybody has to know and I pick and choose who I will tell. The only reason that I am saying so now is the fact that I live in a town where none of my friends have a computer so Im safe I think there are 3 people in this town that know and I doubt that I would have any bussiness if people knew ( talk about the bible belt ) my husband has known since shortly after we met and when I do Rituals he goes in the bedroom and watches a movie so that I have my time with the gods. It is pure and beautifull.

You have to remember that these 3rd World Countries are just that, not in touch with modern ideas and beliefs. I also think to each his/her own in what they believe in. Many people here in the US are firm believers of witchcraft, voodoo, etc. and practice it. Kudos to them for having their own thoughts and sticking to them. Don't scoff at anything because we're far from knowledgeable about our world when you think about how much is truly unexplained. My personal beliefs are not too strong in witchery and voodoo, etc. but remember many moons ago Christians were killed for their "witchery" they practiced too! You never know for sure what is or isn't absolute truth. What appears to be true for one may not be true for others! Hence why God created us all so differently!

What would you say to someone that said a man lived a long time ago had great power and he could heal the sick and he spoke the truth and was killed but three days after, he was alive again and then went to heaven. Would you believe it? Just because it seems strange and a little outdated to you doesn't mean everyone agrees or should be evolved enough to see how "silly" it really is. I am not surprised people believe in voodoo. I am soo glad that people are free to believe in anything they choose or to beileve in no religion at all.

A curse or hex or whatever you want to call it can only ever have any effect on someone who truly believes they can be harmed. However, I am a believer in karma and what goes around comes around

I do not believe in these types of things, but they do sometimes make good horror movies! In my opinion, you would have to be really uneducated and weak-minded to believe in voodoo curses. I really can't believe that people take them seriously. Another thing that makes me sick about these types of religion is the animal sacrifice. How sickening! I can't believe that today, in 2008, there are still people sacrificing animals to the spirits! I am sure there are believers, I just don't happen to be one. I find this "religion" and other types of this kind of religion disgusting. Nothing could make me believe in it; and if my family did, I'd move as far from them as possible and claim to be an orphan! lol

It is the belief in these practices that make them come true. They work on basic psychology principals, that is, you think something is going to happen, then it more than likely will. I don't believe in these things though, so safe from them. It comes down to playing on the weeknesses a person has, you know how to get to a person, then the person's fears will get the better of them.

You should rent " Practical Magic " it is a great movie it has Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, and Aidan Quinn. for those of you who dont remember Stockard Channing she was in Greese she was one of the Pink Ladies and the one who thaught she was pregnant. I think she is great but anyway the movie is great.

I’ve read that Louisiana is very deep in the voodoo/hoodoo/black magic type things Wow is that a misrepresentation. I live right outside of New Orleans and the people here are no different in beliefs than anywhere else in this country. Do I believe in curses, not really. I do believe that people cause the curses to become true.

What you have to realize that such cults or religions really do exist..and the people who follow these religions firmly believe in their powers. Of course, there's two sides of it actually...it's what one believes...so say someone who is a practitioner of such a religion and he/she says to another person, I'm putting a curse on you, that person could actually "talk" themselves into believing a curse was placed on them and viola, something happens to them--it's all really the power of belief-either good or bad--and yes that line “If you don’t believe in it, it can’t hurt you”. is true...there was a similar line in the movie Practical Magic....supposedly any man who married an Owens woman (and they were a long line of witches) was doomed to die. So when Sandra Bullock's character, Sally Owens falls in love with Aiden Quinn's character and vice versa, he says to her "Curses only have power if you believe in them...I don't."

To be honest, I don't know much about vodoo, black magic, evil eye 'or whatever you want to call it ,but I cannot say that I don't believe it because there are so many mysteries that we cannot understand.
