Feeding Hummingbirds

I have a friend who has a wonderful variety of birds that live on her property - she takes such pleasure in them. One of my favorites to watch though are her hummingbirds - she only hangs feeders that have perches so that they can perch and drink and be still for a moment and you can get a good look at them. She gets 100s at a time, it seems... They have even lighted upon her granddaughter's shoulders and hands. She makes her own nectar and does not bother with putting the red dye into it - Do you make your own nectar at home? How many feeders do you keep filled? do you prefer the glass bottles over plastic? do yours have perches attached?

I have two hummingbird feeders hanging from my porch and my mom, who lives next door, has two hanging from her porch. We only have about four hummingbirds around here and they normally fight over the feeders. It's rare for us to see more than one drinking at a time. Ours do have perches and they do use them. We don't make our own nector though, we by it from the local Wal-mart store. I prefer the plastic ones over the glass ones because the glass feeders seem to hold the heat and the birds don't like that.

I can't afford to feed birds but my mom and aunt who live together do. They have hummingbird feeders hung on their kitchen window. I think they buy nectar that is alreay made. They also put out oranges for the hummingbirds they love to eat out of those too.

I love the idea of using oranges! to make your nectar at home boil 1 part sugar in 4 parts water - let it cool before filling the feeders. no need to add dyes which may be dangerous to the little biddies.

I have a client who feeds the little hummers. The male came back last week and I got to see him again today. I have lots of flowers. If they are too good to feed off of my flowers, then I am too good to feed them. LOL Usually I'll see one or two in my flower bed each year. Last year the one I saw had a stray cat stalking up behind it so I had to scare the cat away and the bird flew away too. Sometimes the food chain sucks.

hey cool seeds, glad to "see" you. The only plants that they seem attracted to in our yard, that I have noticed, has been the tiger lilies. I thought they would like the trumpet vines but have not seen them feeding at them yet.

The same here. I have red gladiolus that the humming bird seems to like. I don't remember seeing them feeding from any of the other flowers and pretty sure they are drawn toward the red flowers.

We have one feeder in front of the living room window. I made some stuff to put in it just the other day. It has a glass bottle and perches for them to sit on.

I have a glass hummingbird feeder. It has perches, but the birds don't always use them. I fill it with sugar water, which they like just as well as the nectar you can buy. I don't add color, and they like it fine. I hang it outside my kitchen window so I can hear them when they come. They are so beautiful to watch.

they really are fascinating to watch. I figure the feeder has the red base and that will attract them, no need to add the food coloring which may be not so good for their little bodies.

modestah what a great idea I had notthought of it but we do have hummingbirds here in our complex and no pets. thus if I hung up a hummingbird feeder the birds would have no ememies I think I just might do that soon as it gets a little cooler there. we have a front patio that is fenced in and thus would be an ideasl spot for a humming bird feeder.
