I have seen Riverdance live once, but it was several years ago, and he has long since left that company (a lot of his original choreography has still survived though). I have not seen his Lord of the Dance or Celtic Tiger performance anywhere other than online and a short preview on the Tony Danza show several years ago. Sadly I have not had the pleasure of seeing Flatley live.
But yes, he is one of my favorite dancers. My dance company is similar in that we have both taken our family heritage and the culture and history thereof and set it to dance. Mine is the German population of New Orleans, obviously his focuses on the Irish and one of the shows focuses on the Irish influence in this country. So I do get a lot of inspiration from him in that regard - the general idea and aesthetics of the productions.
I also love his story, which can be found on his website and how he encourages people to follow their dreams no matter how far fetched they may seem. I find it is very unusual for a fellow dancer or dance professional to have such an attitude. Often they are more like, "Oh, you started too late..." or "You're not thin enough..." or something along those lines.
I think he is such an amazing dancer and such a great, positive role model. I am very impressed with him.
