Do you bake your own bread to save money?

Before we put our home on the market I would bake bread instead of buying it. Now I feel like I am out of practice and ready to begin baking again. I know it is cheaper and healthier but I also love that it is all under my control. If I feel like adding things I do, If I want 1 loaf I get it if I want 6 I get that too. And no trips to the store to pickup bread when we run out.
Do we have any bakers here?
Why do you do it?
Does anyone have any good recipes?

I enjoy baking bread, but don't do it all the time. It's especially appealing when the weather is cold. I buy wheat at the feed store and mill it myself, then use that with half white flour, so it isn't expensive at all. I figured it one time at about twenty cents a loaf, but it's probably more than that now, with all the price increases we're seeing. It still beats good bread for three dollars a loaf, though. Here's a basic recipe I use:

Thank you for sharing your blog, Peavey. I am going to try this recipe next weekend! I will post in the cooking section how I think it comes out!

We have made our own bread in a bread making machine, but the price of the yeast is too expensive. I guess I need a good cheap recipe.

I do make my own bread, but I'm not convinced that I save that much money through doing so. I've never actually priced up one of my own loaves, though I ought to.
I use a bread machine, which is incredibly easy and I'd not be without it, and I do really enjoy the bread that I produce. I tend to add all sorts of extra flavourings and herbs to my loaves to make them a little more personal, but I make the same basic recipe each time.
A couple of frugal tricks for a bread machine ....
* Use water and skimmed milk powder instead of 'real' milk to cut costs
* Cut out the egg if the recipe requires one, just making sure that you add additional liquid to compensate
* Save your cans and jars, and use the water you rinse them with as liquid in your machine. I mean things like tomato puree and sauces really, but I've used the sweet leftover liquid from cans of fruit when I've been making sweet loaves before. It adds extra flavour to your loaf.
And my final and most important tip ... make sure there's noone around when you get the fresh loaf and set it out to cool. If you don't, they'll spot it and before you know it there will be slices of warm bread and butter all round and none in the bread bin :-)

i have a bread maker that someone gave to me but i hate the way the bread comes out. i would love to learn to make homemade bread if anyone would care to give me a recipe and a how to on making the dough etc. in this economy we need to do all we can to save every penny.
