Rule of Thumb - does it apply to Golf?

Do you know where this saying comes from? In 15th century England a law was pronounced which said that a man was allowed to beat his errant wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb - hence rule of thumb.
Many centuries ago in Scotland a new game was invented. It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only - Ladies Forbidden' hence we have the acronym 'golf'.

Wow, thanks for sharing that. I've often wondered where some of our more crazy saying have come from and now I know where this one came from.
And golf is just an acronym! Wow, I wonder if the professional players of today know this.
